I have a Chamberlain [chain drive], 1/2 H P opener installed in Aug. 2003. here lately you had to be right up to the door to open it or close it, before it would work 150' away ,so i installed new batterys in both remotes , didn't help at all . Any ideas ??????

That's the only thing I can think of is checking the antenna as above. No new obstructions been added in any way?

No obstructions you know of. Interference can come in many forms. Neighbors doors may be fine, but not yours.

That's where a door man comes in handy. He can plug in and program a new receiver to eliminate a weak receiver. Sometimes there's nothing you can do!

Added any additional lighting or changed any light bulbs recently?

CFL & LED bulbs have been known to effect range.

I called chamberlain recently. The wait time is long but the customer service agent I got seemed knowledgeable. I would give them a call. They sell replacement remotes, maybe something inside is degrading.

No new lights or bulbs . Antenna wire is like always. ?????

Short or no range could be related to radio frequency interference that comes from something in your home or in the surrounding environment. Certain electrical devices can radiate interference; this could be almost anything that is plugged into an electrical outlet. Please keep in mind that the device can be brand new, or an item that has been in use for quite a while. Also, the item may continue to function properly as far as you are able to tell. The only problem with the item may be that it has started to broadcast the interference, with no other symptoms noted. Any electrical device can be the source of the problem.

What type of insulation do you have on the garage wall?
Is the garage door fiberglass or metal?

I have a belt drive Chamberlain opener and have a similar situation. Turns out my garage has foil backed panel insulation and that gets in the way of the signal from the car remote. I also have a fiberglass insulated door that has a stamped metal (it's magnetic so I think it's galvanized steel) exterior.

The garage opener tech who recently out to replace the main door spring (and other's on the web) all say there's NO negative impact for the insulation or the steel door exterior...but, I can trigger the door from 600' away when the door is open, versus only 50' when the door is closed.

I've experimented using different types of wire (solid, stranded, coax, phone, cat5) to use to extend the antenna wire to the outside and it looks like 75 ohm coax cable (LMR-400-75) worked the best for my situation. I can now trigger the door from well over 200' now which comes in handy when rolling up on my motorcycle (I've got a remote wired to the flash to pass button).

You can make an extension for the antenna by removing the original wire and using coax cable but the antenna at the end of the coax needs to be the same aprox length as original wire is what I was told. Or buy the kit from them for much more money.

2.4 ghz phones are a big issue. I've seen Apple TVs cause issues with reception. LED bulbs another source of interference.

We have a scanner at work that picks up interference on the frequencies of the garage door remotes. I've traced interference back to the corner of a neighbor's living room, next to the customer's garage. It may not even be something you own. It could be new electronic devices next door.
