Do you pros use one on compression fittings?

I go to the only plumbing supply store in town that has polyethylene pipe, get the pipe, riser and some compression fittings and tell
them I need the chamfer tool.

"No you don't. No one around here uses that thing on this pipe. It's a waste of money, it's not gonna leak. Take some sand paper, rough up the pipe and slide the fitting on.."

Ok.. so these are the "pro's.." so I leave the tool.

Get home, open the compression fitting..

- chamfer ends
- leave pipe as smooth as possible

Basically directly contradicting the counter guys advice.

Wife was in town so I asked her to run by and pick up the chamfer tool.

"Oh, we don't have any tools in 1"..."

It's gas. It's going underground. I don't want leaks.

Instructions say chamfer, so I think I should chamfer.

You guys who deal with this stuff everyday chamfer?

I bought and used a chamfer tool to make like 3 chamfers when I did my yellow poly install............expensive $30 tool to use only once

BUT, would I have done the 3/4" poly install without it? NO

When I re-routed my LP gas lines I stopped at the local propane company, spoke with the service manager and he let me borrow the tool. I would get the tool one way or another. It is gas and you are going to bury it. It is not the kind of thing you want in the back of your mind. "Gee, I hope it is okay!" Do it once, do it right!

Yeh really. "Boy, I sure hope that line filled with explosive gas isn't leaking next time I start my grill...."

I used t he chamfer tool. I don't think roughing up the pipe is a good idea as the push on connectors are o ring seals . a rough surface leads me to think of a bad seal
the chamfer is to guide the o rings on to the pipe without damaging them .
i suspect you could debur the pipe ( inside & outside) with something else but the cost of the debur tool is less than a coupling so...
