Hello, I bought a used Champion Compressor, Model HR5-8, 5 hp, single phase, with 80 gallon. Tank. From an empty tank to shut off at 160 lbs. it takes 6 1/2 minutes. This sound about right? Thanks, Tom...

I calculated 18.1 CFM, 80gal tank, 6.5 min to fill from 0 to 160psi.

What are the pump CFM specs?

Check belt tension and change oil just to make sure it is operating up to snuff

I highly doubt a 5hp compressor is making 19 cfm. Could be wrong though.

From the manufactures specs:

•RPM @ 125 PSI: 805
•CFM Displacement @ 125 PSI: 23.5
•RPM @ 175 PSI: 710
•CFM Delivered @ 175 PSI: 16.5

$250 and it works good?

Fantastic deal

P.S. You may want to double check your fill up time and final pressure. But from the specs you gave initially I calculated a 18.1 CFM, which means that thing is in good shape.

A real industrial air compressor will put out about 4.5 CFM per horsepower. Champion is not quite as efficient so 19 seems right on.
And it makes no difference how many cylinders you have or how big the tank is it will still only do 4.5 CFM/HP.
Rotary screws are somewhat less efficient than recips.

Went and found the paperwork the previous owner gave me. Appears he bought it new in April of 82 for $1650.00.The manufactures data says it puts out 20.7 CFM displacement and 16.5 CFM delivery. It has an R-15A pump and a Leeson 5HP motor that turns 1740 RPM and the pump turns710 RPM. It was used for home/hobby use and the owner was moving to a smaller place. Tom...

This makes me even more ready to get my new unit hooked up! How loud/quiet is it compaired to other 5hp units you have been around?

Curious what the fill time will be on mine, I have a 7.5hp version of yours that I haven't been able to hook up just yet. Only difference is mine was new in 2002, not much changed in the 20 years between our two though.

I think it is quite quiet. I had an OLD Westinghouse air brake compressor that I could hear outside with the doors shut! This one is very quiet compared to that. Also rechecked the 0 to full time and it is a consistent 6 1/2 minutes. Tom...

How did you calculate that? What kind of time is appropriate for a 60gallon to 175psi at the same 18cfm?

If you put a more modern air filter housing on it, it will be even more quiet.

I have an 83 Champion and changed the filter housing and it made a noticeable difference.
