That's interesting. What's under the static jaw/anvil when you lift it up on it's hinge? What is the reason it is hinged?

I suppose you could hold something much larger between the moveable jaw and the underside of the static jaw when it's hinged up. I see a little knob on the underside of the tail that should keep the hinged jaw vertical.

The early era of tool experimentation yielded a number of interesting beasts, including the combo anvil/vise. I've never seen one quite like yours but the market quickly determined that what sounded like a good idea, in practice, was not. I suspect that what you have here is a rare bird but not of great value.

All of that said, I think it's a cool thing to use around the shop. I'd certainly have fun with it.

And it doesn't appear to have an Acme thread.

I had not noticed that. I suppose they got by with a regular thread because of the small turn knob instead of the normal longer arm for tightening the jaws.

PS, I had to look up Acme Thread. Similar to trapezoidal or square cut threads that can take a lot more force.
