Champion Compressor- Auto Tank Drain?

Hey everyone, I had a quick question I was hoping to get some answers to, I bought a nice Champion 80 gal compressor for use at home, and it came with an auto tank drain, and still has a petcock at the bottom to drain water off, with a supply line from the bottom drain up to the auto drain...

I've drained water a couple times at the bottom and gotten a little bit of water out of the tank, but I've never had the auto tank drain do anything that I know of, other than I believe it also discharges air for the unloader possibly? How does this thing cycle? Any insight is appreciated.

The old version used the discharge air from the unloader valve and ran into a diaphragm that would create a venturi effect ( I think) and **** out water from the bottom of the tank there was a bucket high about a foot up from the bottom of the tank. There was a tube that ran from that drain to the bottom of the tank on the inside. When the unloaded discharged air, it would create some type of suction effect that would pull the water out of the bottom of the tank and put it into a bucket at the bucket high drain. It looks like yours has a newer style. I assume that the concept is similar.

I eliminated the auto drain from mine because it has about five or six different connection for air to leak, as well as the diaphragm valve needed rebuilt. I also illuminated the low oil pressure switch because it was giving me fits, and it had plenty of oil

I am just going off of memory, someone else may be able to quote "chapter and verse " but I think that was the main idea behind it. I do like the fact that it ran off of the discharge air, rather than an auto drain timer running at whatever set frequency.
