Im looking to purchase a USED Champion compressor pump only. I have two local options an R15 splash lubricated model and a R30 also splash lubricated. I am wanting to build a custom setup to go on a service truck where tank is separate and not setup like a traditional horizontal, gas,30gal setup. I am told that I want to have the head unloader version of the pump. My question is; is their a way to determine if the pumps I'm looking at are models with head unloaders either by just looking at them or running serial number? Second question is; if I go with the bigger R30 pump can I still use the Honda GX390 engine or do I need a bigger engine to run it? Tried goin on champion website but not much info that I can use.

Edit: Looks like head unloader models have plumbing coming out the top of the manifolds on head. Unfortunately both local options are Non head unloader versions. Also looked at hydraulic compressors units but price difference is pretty substantial and i believe very similar to r30 pump ratings; also thinking a gas engine/compressor combo might be more reliable honestly. Anyone have parts needed to convert an R30 to head unloader spec?

You can install a blow off valve to dump any air produced directly back to atmosphere. There are many such devices for sale and they sometimes incorporate a bull whip throttle control cable as well. An R30 is a 10hp pump, so you would need a 20hp gas motor to run it.

You will also have to ensure your rig is kept reasonably level with a splash lube pump.

I thought all r30's were disc valve??; good to know for sure. I was able to find an r30 with Head Unloaders so I'm assuming that makes it an automatic disk valve unit? Will be looking for a Honda GX690 to pair it to. If I can't find a used one I will end up buying new. Now I just have to figure out what color I want to paint compressor after I break it all down.

Looks like R-30 HU is probably the unit model #

Only reason I know about the Pumps a bit, because I talked to the a guy at Pacific Air.
He put the bug in Champion to put the R-30 pump with a 7.5 HP Motor..
Sold tons off them the first year.. I have the 7.5 HP/ R-30d model of that unit.
I am super happy with just how quiet it is with plenty of CFM turning 570 RPM

SO the H.P. mostly just has to do with the cfm rating of the head. They are also rated at a certain rpm. The slower you turn it, the longer it will last. The 390 should be fine but you'll need to size the pulley ratios for the head and motor. Its kinda hand in hand.

What do you plan to do with your compressed air?
I've run an r15 for most of my life but I just got a blast cabinet and that is why I went with the 30.
