Re: Champion Compressor I'm going to look at.

See if it has a hour meter. If so, note the hours and ask if the valves have been serviced. The valves can carbon up, and that's really the only trouble spot I recall on the Champs. Also, if you plan on using it as a duplex, make sure the controls work properly.

Crack open the tank drain and watch what comes out. That may give some indication of tank condition.

If you don't mind my asking, what's the owner asking for $$$ ?

Re: Champion Compressor I'm going to look at.

Sounds good. That was a spendy machine new. Probably 120 gallon tank and twin 5hp? Maybe 7 1/2's? Good machines if you have the floorspace.

Most of the ones I saw were in dealerships.

Seller mentioned 210 gallon tank, didn't know motor hp and has the control boxes for it's twin also.

Re: Champion Compressor I'm going to look at. Update

Compressor secured, some assembly required.:) I think $450 was a fair price. Next stop the car wash.

Re: Champion Compressor . Update+Pics

I put power to the compressor today, runs fine. I need two belts for the other pump, air filters, pressure gauge, bucket high drain assembly. Also figure out the discharge piping from the pump.

Re: Champion Compressor . Update+Pics

Unless your compressor has aftercoolers between the pumps and the tanks, it looks like you need to swap the discharge pipes. Your tank check valves probably have elbows and other fittings to connect the unloaders.

Re: Champion Compressor . Update+Pics

Talk about some dumb luck, I'm searching a local C/L and I find the other match to the compressor I bought last year. I'm talking this is the #2 compressor from the other business owner that sold me #1 compressor.
The parts he doesn't have I do and vise-versa, I'll be checking this out later today.

This makes me want to buy that 60 gal upright champion from the 60's I found at that thrift store in town. I didn't have the guts to bring it home as I had no idea on the condition. What do you do with all these compressors?

That compressor tank looks good! Great finds on those compressors! How hard is the re-alignment of the belts/pulleys & such any tricks to do it just right? I have an old compressor I want to paint but I don't want too much of a hassle re aligning the puleys, as I believe misalignment will cause excessive belt wear.

I've aligned the pump and motor so the belts lay flat, then adjust the tension. The pump has adjustment for up/down movement, the motor has laterial.

Re: Champion Compressor . Update+Pics

A little more complete, the wiring will require a bit of studying.

Ah, the Duplex Champion R15 pump set up. Not a bad system for what you paid. I liked the old ones when the cylinders were cast iron. The new style aluminum cylinders are great for cooling off quick, but when they get too hot they expand too much and pump up a lot of oil. The wiring is a snap. Check the valves though. They have small crappy springs that will break from time to time causing the high side safety valve to pop when running. Good score though.
