Champion Compressor Question

I am in the market for a Compressor. Two Stage, 80 gallon, either 5 or 7.5 HP. I have looked at the IRs and the Eatons and feel comfortable with the specs on these compressors. From this BBS I know that the Quincy's and the Champion's are held in very high esteem. But, I have noticed with the Champions that there seems to be a number of product lines and have heard that there may be some concerns, or need for information, on the lower, or consumer lines manufactured by Champion. :headscrat

I was looking at a VRV 5-8. I would appreciate anyones thoughts and opinions on any compressor, but would really appreciate opinions on the VRV 5-8 or any other Champion. Of course I would like to spend the least for the best but my budget range is around $1500 (could creep up if the value is there).

IR has different levels of quality......most do to compete in the commercial and average joe markets.....

you know you can't go wrong with a quincy......nuff said.....

champion looks to be top notch too....

i went down this path that you are going down too...

i'll tell ya, $1500 will get you a LOT of compressor if you are patient and shop craigslist and do ebay around your zip code.......

i picked up a belair ($2100 shipped to your door from amazon.com), a BUNCH of garagepak fittings and a matco regulator and dryer ($800-1000 worth of fittings)....all for $700.....like new, less than a year old

since then, i've passed better deals and seen very similar deals.......

Dear BMW Power,

I live in Ventura County California in a town called Moorpark. The VRV 5-8 specs will be coming. But in brief the unit is a 5Hp 80 gallon. More to come.

My little input about Champion- Where I work there is a Champion compressor in the carpenter shop. I don't know the exact details but it a horizontal tank about 60 gal with a 2 piston (never really looked to see if it's 2 stage or not) compressor. It lives in the ugliest, dirtiest enviroment you can imagine and gets used hard every work day. It has it's intake piped outside so it's very quiet running.
Anyway, under these less than ideal conditions it works perfectly for the ~5 years that it's been there.

On another note- where I work the older buildings use a pnuematic HVAC control system. Each building has a compressor. I've worked here 21 years and they are older than that. The compressors are made for the Johnson System by DeVilbiss Compressors. They are online all year add up the run time and it's a huge number. They keep going and going and going and going with nothing more than oil and filter changes. I belive their long life is due to the fact that they run slowly as compared to the "home" type compressors I've seen.

Acording to Eaton compressor's site the disc valves are better than reed valves, how or why or what the difference is I don't know.

Anyone with any additional opinions on the reed valves in this champion unit? Or should I spend the extra $400 on disc valves?

my dealership have champion air compressor. it is very good compressor but it is have problem that i had to drain water out of compressor once a every week because it will make water go out to air tools....

Hi Dan,

I grew up in Simi, and I know Moorpark has grown a lot over the years. I worked at Moorpark Tire about 27 years ago. 480 Moorpark Ave. It's probably a parking lot now.

It has changed a whole lot. What Cross Street was Moorpark Tire located near?

You would be surprised, that despite the construction of Home Depot, Kmart (here and gone), staples, Kohls, Mervins and a lot of other big box folks, the town has not lost its soul. High Street is alive and well. Seeing as how this town was a big stop on the Camino De Real over 200 years ago, there are Spanish and Mexican familys that have that long lineage to the area and it lends a flavor of the character of the town along with the farm and orchard communities that for generations made this town what it is.

I have been in and out of Ventura County for the better part of 24 years. I have seen how it changed and how it is worrysome do see it done the right way having grown up in Orange County.

There is a fantastic sense of community. It is a very well kept secret, even today. I moved here in 95, got married in 2001, went to war in 2001 the wife, well that is another story, so I moved back to Moorpark. People actually wave to each other here, I mean it, it is great.

27 years is a long time, but you don't have to look hard to see the heart of this town.

All it is is an electronic valve that opens and closes, similar to what you'd do on your own with a ball valve.

Yes, depending on how much liquid you have and what drain interval you set. On the auto drain there are 2 knobs - one to set the drain interval and one to set the drain length of time.

Mine is set to drain for 0.5 seconds every 45 minutes. For me that seems to be the best config since I rarely use the compressor.

Let's see...as I dust off the cobwebs...

It was just south of the RR tracks that are (were) just south of High Street. It was on the east side of Moorpark Ave. across the street from a small market. We used to eat breakfast at the Redwood Cafe on High Street (tiny place-about 4 tables and a counter). There was also a restaurant on the north side of High Street that made killer biscuits and gravy.

The Moorpark Tire building was originally the Wm. L Morris Chevrolet dealership, and was built in the 1950s. The attic was full of NOS parts and sales literature from the early 1960s. I wish I had brought that stuff home instead of tossing it...;)

This was long before the 118-23 freeway connection was made, so a lot of traffic went through town. I think the newest business was the Circle K at the Moorpark Ave./118 intersection. Residential development was nonexistent.
The biggest joke at the time was "What is Moorpark spelled backwards?"...lol

My folks still live in Simi, but to be honest, there are WAAY too many people down there these days for my liking.

EDIT: I just looked on Google Earth and the building is still there...
