I picked up this compressor from a buddy last week for $50 and he has had it for years. I was wondering if anyone has ever heard of it.

Heard of Champion? Of course. Champion is one of the grand old names in American air compressors. Now, that antique might possibly be the first one they ever built, but... lol

Thanks Guys I called Garner-Denver and all they could tell me about it was that it was shipped out to Reliable Tire Service in Grand Rapids Michigan on 10/21/1938.

I have a 1949 Champion RE-7 air compressor with a bad shaft seal. The factory shows that its obsolete and has "NO" information on this model pump except they made them between 1936 and 1956!

Your compressor pump looks earlier then RE-7 because of the air breather on the crank case. It can't be very much earlier than my Model "K" that is a two cylinder horizontal opposed design that they think is about 70 to 90 years old. I don't think that this "K" model of mine is not near 90 since it still has "V" belt drive vice flat belt.

Your air filter does not look like it could be stock either? Kind of looks after market maybe.

I don't think that yours requires more than 1 1/2 H.P.

Would be a good idea to Hydrostatic test the tank, and if you do run it, to keep the PSI down as low as possible before you have that tank checked out. You don't want 150 PSI on board if that tank decides its going to grenade on you.

Do you have any documentation? Or know of any? I'm looking for any on these early models.

I have a champion NR 150 pump off of a 1962 dated tank, used a 1hp Lima motor. According to the guy I got it from it was from an airport.

Problem is it takes 23 minutes to build 125 psi in the 60gal tank, likely needs rings and I doubt I can get them:(

I did get a Emerson compressor motor and a 60gal Husky tank with it, so it was worth the 100$ I spent

Plinker: Hastings can sell you rings by size , just need the measurements . Otto Gas Engine works also offers the same service .You may have intake valves that are carboned up or gummy , maybe just a clean up ....

Ram,

You might be able to check out an industrial seal business such as John Crane, AES, etc. for that shaft seal replacement.

The air filter is a K&N

It has a 2 H.P. motor on it

How would I go about testing it?

No I have no documentation, the only thing that Champion could tell me was the ship date and who it was shipped to.

Elroy finds it a miracle Gardner has retained records that go back that far.

If you do not have a facility that can test a tank of that size. I've read that you can fill the tank up with water almost to full then pressurize with air or a grease gun to 1.5 times the working PSI. If that holds with spraying water its to be good. Water is to be safer then running it up with that much air psi.

I like the idea of taking it someplace. Before my storage HD crashed I had some info stored on it. Now have to find it all over again.

Re: Champion Compressor and first post (hello!)

Hello all and thank you for a great forum! I found you during my search for information on MY OLD CHAMPION! My sense is that it is not as old as some talked about here. I have pictures on a floppy disk, but no floppy reader on my work computer.

This compressor has special meaning to me as it was just given to me on father's day by my dad. He bought it well used, he used it for 15 years, and then I believe the start-capacitor went, so it sat in his garage un-touched for another 25 years. Dad has been helping me repair some badly rusted spots on my old BMW and we were getting ready to paint it when my four or five year old Powermate with its 5hp (yeah right) motor started groaning to turn over the pump. I think the Powermate was not used to several hours of grinding welds with a pneumatic hand grinder. Rings likely so Dad said I could have his old Champion if I could find someone to repair the 2 HP motor. My Powermate pulls 13 amps at 115V and is claimed 5hp with 30 gallon tank. Champion must have had original motor replaced as a $600 Dayton sits atop it now that pulls 12.5 amps at 230V single phase and it is *only 2 HP*

A new start capacitor and the compressor is running right up to 130 PSI no problem. Tank looks great, but will have it tested ASAP. Need a replacement air filter/silencer and the funky brass fitting that is about 10" up the vertical 80 gal. tank for the water drain. Brass fitting has a ****** on the inside that appears to mate with a metal tube that likely pulls the water off the very bottom of the tank. Anyone jknow where to get parts? The pump is a model RE-10 followed by a 9A which may be a clue to build date. No plate with seriel# and such. Just a number engraved into the pump with a hand engraver. Pump sits atop the same pedestel shown in Ghettoluxery's post of
3/23/2010. What is the purpose of this base that looks to accept air from the pump before it goes to the tank. Is this the "tower" they speak of in these old Champion ads? Anyone know the difference between an RE-10 and just a R-10? I already cherish this compressor as it took over for the failed Powermate and allowed us to finish the car which came out beautiful!

Thanks for any and all help for this 56 year old newbie.

Can anyone please tell me anything about this antique champion air compressor? I recently aquired it and know nothing about it. I can't seem to find out how old it is or what model it is. The pump is the only thing original.
