I am set on a Champion 2000 w generator and looking at SuperGenProducts.com for my purchase. They offer 3 different models one of which is refurbished. My questions are:

(1) Anyone have any history with this company (they are an authorized refurbisher and distributor for Champion)?
(2) The difference between the refurbished unit and the 2 new units is $100 but the new is 1700w running and the refurbished is 1600w running. New has a 2 year warranty and refurbished only 90 days.

Buy the refurb or pay extra $100 for 2 yr warranty?

Warranty is only as far as you can throw it, but an extra $100 for new doesn't sound bad. What are they asking outright for the two units?

Any reason the local small engine shop doesn't have one?

Can't find a local distributor for champion. Actually new is $519 and refurb is $399--so $120 price difference although Amazon has another vendor selling for $499

For $120, I think I would buy the new one. Not enough discount on the refurb especially with only a 90 day warranty.

I have not had a refurbished generator, but I did not like most other refurbished things I have had in the past. I think I have learned my lesson.

My question is WHY only 2K?? You are not planning on using this for home backup are you?

I'd use a 2K at the racetrack to power a fan, microwave, power tool, chargers, etc. That's about it.

I bought a champion 3500 4000 peak watt gen at tractor supply for under 300 on sale at tractor supply. starts on the first or second pull reliably. That was 6 years ago when I needed electric building my garage, I still use it occasionally. They still run the same sale every few months.

Relatively quiet compared to some.

That should tell you something. Tractor Supply sells GARBAGE tools, power and otherwise.

Don't get me wrong, I love the store. I can get things there that I used to only be able to get mail order, but their tool selection is a disgrace.

Champion is bottom of the line Chinese cheap.

Then the bottom works pretty damn good. The 3500 is on sale for 279$ right now. 2000 is pretty useless for track work if AC is ever involved. I can run 13.5k and make coffee, fix hot lunch, etc. The guy that rents the next space over has a Champion 5k and has had it for several years.

When I drag raced generators were not much of an issue. With motocross, it is OBNOXIOUS when someone is running a Champion or other cheap genny at full tilt all night long, or even during the day depending on where you are pitted. IMO that is one of the main reasons to go with a quality generator, clean and quiet power.

Champion is not bottom of the line. They actually make a good, reliable generator for the money. Their inverter line of generators are very quiet if you need a quiet generator. They also have a good parts and service department.

I suspect a lot if not most of those refurbished generators are just simply returns to places that have a liberal return policy. I have a refurbished Champion inverter generator and it looked brand new when I got it.

Cant help ya with the noise. The only quiet generators i see at the tracks we run are a couple found at estate sales or in $300K+ motor homes. Everybody else seems to like the under $1000 5000/6500 units. Champion, the one they sell at Sams, Harbor Freight/Pep Boys. There are a bunch of $499 5k units that have been in use for years. If money was no problem, sure - one 5k inverter please.

CPO Outlets sells new and refurb items, had good luck with things from them..

Those Hondas are great generators and very quiet. The Champion inverter generators are almost as quiet.
