We had one just like that in High School Auto Shop!

Went to a yard sale last year it was an old couple must have been in their 80's. He had a completely self contained spark plug tester. It had an air compressor built into it! It was really cool lookin! He said he had it since the 50's. I offered him $500 for it but he said it wasnt for sale. :?(

Hoping he has another yardsale this year see if he's ready to sell it yet!!

We had one of those in a Dodge store I worked at in '82.

That place was a pit of practical jokers. When I was still the FNG they wired the coil of a van I was working on to the driver's seat, when you first turned the key on the coil would fire one time. If you tried to crank it it would of course repeatedly knock the **** out of you.

I figured out the the used car mech was the instigator in most of the high voltage related jokes. It was damn sure not funny when the joke was on him. After they all left one day I wired the spark plug tester to his tool box through an old horn switch I put under the rubber mat he had in front of the tool box. After he had to buy a hood for the car he landed on it seems the jokes weren't so funny anymore.

Those spark plug tester's are so cool!

But I know I wouldn't pay $300 bucks for it. Now the one for $50 is a deal!

Hopefully it'll be there tomorrow...at half price!!!

Well I was not first in line but managed to pick it up for $25.
Not sure if I am going to keep her or flip her just yet.
The power plug needs to be replaced but the abrasive blaster/cleaner works good.
This may be sac-relig but was thinking it would make a great shop beverage cooler???

Yeah, I know it's an old thread but haven't been here in a while so I thought I'd share.

Here's an old unit I just finished a resto on.

Before:

After:

Most folks refurb them to original but I decided to "hot rod" this one.

I've got all the plug holders and the cleaner and tester work like new. Not sure if I'll keep it or flip it. Too nice to get banged around in the garage and kind of big for the office desk!

Thanks for looking.

Clean the spark plugs with abrasive material/air blast as I recall. After that, not what I'd want to stick back in my engine. I vote beverage cooler. :)

There was one at my previous employer. Its the small one like the first poster almost bought. Wonder if it is still there? There were Pro's and Con's to using them as sometimes the plugs still wouldn't fire under engine compression. Modern plugs (I am told) have a nonconductive coating on the Ceramic that sandblasting will remove shortening the life?
