Wow that was a hard video to get through...

Whatever Kobalt told him is complete bs. Like I posted before, pretty much all the Kobalt cordless stuff is gone from the Lowes by my job.

Ya, I can only take so much of his videos. I know he's just energetic, but feels like acting at the same time, and usually way too long for the content.

Now just because your one store cleared it out, doesn't mean that is happening everywhere. Retailers are always testing different selling options. My 3, I guess 4 now, Lowe's that I visit, all have dedicated sections for Kobalt power tools.

I saw a few Kobalt markdowns at my local Lowes and they have rearranged everything to put Craftsman front and center. The single sockets and other tools are starting to arrive but there are still more to come judging from the empty spaces in the displays. Some of the packaging is shoddy with socket sets falling out of their packing rails hanging there on the display. Lots of different sets to choose from, some China some Taiwan.

Biggest thing I was taken aback by was pricing. Nothing cheep here. Many things are priced outrageous! Especially accessory items like a 1/4 plastic socket tray for 18.97. a 1/2 inch socket rail for 18.98. None of those things cost over a dollar to make.

Harbor freight has no competition here. Similar tools for 5+ times the price.

Craftsman was a good(not great) tool at a reasonable price. Now it is an ok tool that is overpriced. Nothing to see here.

My Lowe's has a clearance on Kobalt and, like others wrote, they're displaying Craftsman tool boxes, tool chests, and hand tools prominently.

The sales clerk in tools discounted screwdrivers in half when I merely asked for a price check.

What is everyone's thoughts about the quality and reliability of their screwdrivers, sockets, and ratchets?

I'm going to keep original packaging and receipts in case of return, though I don't know whether they'll really honor them in the future after their Kobalt line is long gone.

They have this tool set on clearance for $99:

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-227-Piece-Standard-Sae-and-Metric-Mechanic-s-Tool-Set-Hard/50200795

Also, has anyone done a warranty exchange at Lowe's for a Craftsman hand tool that they did not buy at Lowe's?

I actually like Kobalt more than Craftsman and Husky. I have used their tools on a daily basis for over 6 years, screwdrivers/ratchets, and I'm extremely pleased with their quality.

Funny you posted that tool set since I just bought the same in eBay yesterday for $10.99 shipped. I think the retailer (blinq.com) typed in the incorrect number as opposed to being $109.99.

I received the email this morning telling me it shipped and I'll have it Monday. We'll see

I'm not certain since I can't see all the included sockets and wrenches. That said, it doesn't look good to me. That isn't a quality issue but a selection issue.

In my personal experience I want a good selection of deep sockets. For my Japanese cars the critical sizes are 10, 12, 14, 17. Given how hard it is to reach some fasteners I want a combo wrench for each of the above. This set appears to stop at 13mm. So you really need to add more wrenches 14mm and up to have a decent selection.

My first Cman set had shallow 3/8 down to, I think, 12 mm but the smallest deep was 15mm. Often the only way I could get a socket on a 14mm bolt was using a deep 1/4 drive. Shallow was too shallow and a 3", 3/8 extension was too long. Well I broke 2 1/4 drive ratchets before deciding to get a14mm deep 3/8 socket. Haven't broken a 1/4 since.

So personally I want to see at least a 14mm deep 3/8 socket and preferably 12 or even 10mm 3/8 drive. This set doesn't appear to have any deep overlap and I can't tell if the 3/8 includes 14mm or not.

There ratchets do feel nice but I'd trade that for a better selection of sockets.

"Sounds like that member met an uninformed employee. The Craftsman website spells it out very clearly. Return your item to any stocking retailer for replacement."

I just checked craftsman.com, but for hand tools, it only said to return hand tools to them for warranty service. In other words, I saw nothing about retailers honoring warranties for tools that they didn't sell.

I would like to have a link to what you found so that I can print this out and take it to Lowe's for a warranty exchange on an old Craftsman ratchet. Do you have that link handy?

Thanks

The Lowes site asks for owners to call a 1-800 number to check on warranty information.

A tale of two Lowe's.

My local Lowe's is small and has a small tool section. They have a clearance going on for Kobalt tools and is stocking LOTS of Craftsman, in fact out onto end caps and the front wall. The other day, they practically begged me to pick up screwdrivers.

Today, I visited the other Lowe's, which is out of town for me and normally has a large tool section with tools that my local Lowe's lacks. The tool section was almost empty, but had no clearance on the Kobalt tools.

Thoughts?

What experiences have you had with warranty-ing Kobalt tools at Lowe's?

By the way, here's Kobalt's lifetime warranty:

I bought all my Williams wrenches like that. 10, 12, 14, 15,17, 19 in individuals. Saved 50 bucks not getting the fillers I'll never use

Where I live in VA we have 2 Lowes in town..one store has completely switched to craftsman (no kobalt at all) and the other is about 1/2 and 1/2.

As far as them honoring the warranties, I've had customers (I work at Sears) tell me they have tried replacing at both locations and were told if they don't have a receipt saying they bought it from Lowe's they won't replace it (our local Ace does the same thing).
I also have been told by people out of the area that their Lowe's (or Ace for that matter) doesn't have an issue replacing. So it might be just a matter of which store you go to.

I have a couple of tools that need replacing so I think I might go try myself.

Thats how the Lowes are around here. They will warranty Craftsman they sold you..must have a reciept. Still no singles tho..so not sure how they are going to do that..unless you have to bring the whole set back...? Anybody seeing Craftsman singles at their Lowes...?

FWIW,

i had to pay a visit to a local lowes to warranty a ratchet i broke on thursday.

it seems like the employees at the service desk had no idea that kobalt tools even had a warranty. it took several minutes, and 2 supervisors, to get my warranty replacement.

i did notice that most of the kobalt tools were gone, and everything that was left had clearance prices on it.

i probably made my last warranty return to lowes. it's just a matter of time before this ratchet breaks again, i'm just wondering hat will happen the next time, and they no longer carry an kobalt tools....

in the ratchets defense, i also broke a SO ratchet while trying to remove the same axle nut. maybe it's time to "retire" the kobalt to garage duty, and buy a ratchet that doesnt have to be replaced every year....

No, not at mine. I wonder if it's just due to thefts (tools is cordoned off and you have to pay before leaving the tool area)?

It's not likely a logistics/stocking problem, because they're overstocked with Craftsman tool sets and portable tool boxes and have Kobalt single sockets (still) in bins.

Thanks.

Do you mean that you used both ratchets as breaker bars?

Have you gotten a chance to warranty the SO?

I'm wondering if Lowe's will replace Kobalt with Craftsman? Not that the current Craftsman are any better, but perhaps some day, if StanleyBlack&Decker makes good on its promise, we can warranty them with US made Craftsman.

The few Lowes that I been to has been clearing out Kobalt tools. Will I miss Kobalt > NO. Nothing special about it. I noticed that tools at Lowes rarely goes on sale except for a few common power tools.

Just because they are carrying Craftsman (a brand they do not own or control) that doesn't mean they are discontinuing Kobalt (a brand they own and control). Some stores have increased their Craftsman presence while others only have a few endcaps of stuff. Kobalt isn't getting phased out, that would be just a poor business decision on Lowes part. The only way I see them getting phased out is if Lowes becomes the only distributor of Craftsman and that isn't happening. I'm in Columbus and all the stores I've been in (6+ stores) this area have a prominent Kobalt presence and with some Craftsman. Its basic retail. Stock and shelf space goes up and down all the time plus they always test different marketing approaches per area. I just see all these post saying Kobalt is getting discontinued and it just makes me laugh. I don't ever see Craftsman returning to its glory days. The competition and market is totally different now. Ive got 90% USA Craftsman in my collection. At this point with what I've seen from Stanley, I'd rather have Kobalt or Tekton.

I hope Lowe's is not terminating the Kobalt brand; competition among tool suppliers is always a good thing for us consumers.

However, I'm concerned because the head cashier at Lowe's told me the other day that Lowe's is, in fact, closing out Kobalt. She explained that Lowe's had too many warranty returns. Maybe that's just for my store, but a bigger Lowe's in the next couple cities over has an anemic stock of Kobalt hand tools. Anyone have information confirming or denying this?

Well, I have a current thread going in Free Parking about my experience.....

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=415462

Let's just say it's not been pretty, but I was made whole in the end of it all. Unless I ended myself up on their special "list" that blackballs me from ever returning anything else to a Lowe's for as long as I live. Time will tell.

Jeff

edit: and I did mention something to the effect of Lowe's getting rid of Kobalt to the store employees at the beginning of my story. The service counter lady was adamant that they were NOT getting rid of them, they were just "reorgainizing" the tool section to bring Craftsman on. I smell ********, but that's just me.

I have found that cashiers aren't usually the most knowledgeable on Company product issues. I've went to Kobalt's Facebook pages and read several posts by the moderator stating that they are not being phased out. New stuff gets released often it just doesn't make it into all of the stores. They have already released a couple of new 24v cordless tools this year.

The same thing is happening at Lowes locations in Canada. Just stopped in today and looks like I'm a little late to the party for getting the most desirable clearance stuff, although they did still have quite a lot of Kobalt wrench sets and single sockets left. Probably 75% of what was left was SAE as the Metric is obviously clearing out much faster.

I'm not a big Kobalt fan, but I still picked up an 8 pc flex head ratchet wrench set in metric for $57 CDN (I think regular price was like $170 or something like that). Even buying the most bargain basement online junk a set like this would be over $100, so I thought it was a steal. Flex heads don't lock but also aren't floppy and have enough resistance to hold position. Ratchet box end has more teeth and smoother operation than my non-flex Mastercraft Maximum wrenches. Was tempted to pick up the matching SAE set because OCD, but opted against it (because I touch my SAE tools about twice a year). Also grabbed a couple single sockets and wrenches to replace some missing/broken stuff.

This is just my assumption based on what I'm seeing in the store, so take it with a grain of salt, but I noticed that Kobalt sockets/ratchets/wrenches were on clearance, as were the tool boxes. But Kobalt pliers, screwdrivers, saws, and air tools were still full price and prominently featured. Craftsman socket sets and wrench sets are featured on all the aisle ends, and huge Craftsman posters of wrenches and sockets everywhere. Craftsman tool boxes were also featured prominently with "Made in USA" in huge stickers all over them. There were some Craftsman pliers and screwdrivers as well, but not featured nearly the same way.

So my takeaway is that Kobalt will be gone completely from the wrench / socket / ratchet world, but the Kobalt name isn't necessarily being phased out completely. I think Lowes will use the Craftsman name for all of their mechanic/auto tools, and they also seem to have an extensive line of Craftsman cordless tools (and no Kobalt). I think those are the markets Lowes will use Craftsman in, and they will keep Kobalt around for corded power tools, air tools, and other small filler segments.

Comparing pricing, it looks like the Craftsman stuff is their entry level stuff all around. Despite the big marketing push on their wrenches, the sets are less expensive than the regular price of the outgoing Kobalt versions. For instance, an 8 pc metric box end wrench set is $34.99 for Craftsman, and the Kobalt was regular price $39.99 before clearance. The Craftsman hand tools were all "made in China" in very small lettering on the back, but huge "LIFETIME WARRANTY" on the front.

The cordless tools the Craftsman stuff also fit into the bottom of the price range, obviously below the name brand stuff like DeWalt and Milwaukee.

The tool boxes were in line with regular pricing on most of the local big box stores, although usually those boxes don't sell until they go on 50% off sales every few weeks. Yet to be seen if that is what they will do with the Craftsman ones too. But both the boxes and a large selection of tape measures were heavily advertised as "MADE IN USA" so that seems to be their selling point there. Basically anything they could produce at a reasonable price in the US they are and pumping that hard, and then the hand tools are made in China but lifetime warranty.

Kobalt was really nice when it was still USA made; I have some Danaher era Kobalt sockets and Williams made Kobalt wrenches. Regardless of what brand was stamped in the side, those were fine tools. The quality has undoubtedly gone downhill since they sent production offshore. Now I see little difference between Kobalt and the Quinn line sold at Harbor Freight.

I have a Stanley flathead screwdriver that has a broken tip that I'd like to get replaced. Has anyone tried to warranty Stanley hand tools at Lowe's?
