Change BSP to NPT?

Hi all,
Apologies for the silly question, I am an electrical guy, not so much mechanical.
So can I drill out a 3/8 BSPT female thread in an aluminum housing, and tap it for a 3/8 NPTT fitting?
The reason for asking is I want to replace some plastic BSPT to hose barb fitting with Brass fittings, and I can't find any of the proper size unless I look at NPTT.

Did you try searching for BSP fittings at McMaster-Carr? They have quite a good selection.

Adapters are available, we get them at work. It's also been known to screw the two together as there is only about a 1/2 thread difference. It's enough to make brass scream when tightening them together.

My local hydraulic shop had a BSP->NPT adapter... had to use it to put an oil pressure gauge on my old Kubota.

The drill difference between the two is small, but the BSP uses a larger drill hole and BSP is not tapered (unless you meant BSPT), so I think you will want the adapter vs trying to make it work. Plus the thread area conflicts between the two. So the other option would be to drill it out to a larger size.

Unless you plan to use lots of British fittings, your idea of drilling and tapping a standard American threaded hole is a good one. Might make things easier in the future.

Yup. BSP to NPT adapter. I had to deal with these on Kubota engines for the oil pressure sending units.

History: after WWII, both the United States and Great Britain helped put Japan back together again, including providing tooling for their industry. So this is how Kubota came to use British Standard Pipe threads.

Related trivia: there are some Japanese cities in which their AC power systems use 50HZ on one side of river (rebuilt by British) and 60HZ on the other (rebuilt by the US). Before the widespread adoption of universal-input switching power supplies, this caused a great deal of headaches (I won't even mention their absurdly-low voltage levels).
