A couple months ago I posted about moving an old garage to my property for use as a storage shed. After checking out the old shed more thoroughly, I decided it wasn't in good enough condition to bother with.

I've now decided to take the funds I had set aside for rebuilding my hotrod and use them for building a new garage. It will be big enough (18 x 22) to actually be useful as a shop but still fall within my limited budget. I'll keep the old 12 x 20 garage to use for storage and gardening equipment.

I've got it staked out in the yard already, now I'm waiting for the town to come by to locate the old survey pins and approve of the location. Once that happens I'll get started on the slab. I hope to have the basic building up later this summer. Pics will follow once things get going.

I realize this is a bit late in the process but any chance you located your new shed close to the old garage? If so you could link them with a breezeway or even simply connect them. That way you'd have a weather protected connection between the two structures.

You can make that work, any new garage is going to be a good one Al. Are you going to add some good height to it ?

CONGRATULATIONS Al!!!! I wish you every happiness in the building and using your new shop. You'll always find money for the rod, but a shop has to be PUSHED though!

Thanks guys!! Yes, it will sure be nice to have some elbow room when I'm working on the hotrod. I'm going with 10' walls for a little added room as well. Pics to come once I start excavating for the pad. :)

OK, here's a couple of early "build" pics. I will be getting someone with a Bobcat to come dig out the lawn shortly, then I can get the base for the slab ready.

I could have built bigger if I'd oriented the garage so the OH door opened onto the alley, but I wanted the garage to parallel the alley so traffic heading down the road can't see in the garage when I have the door open. I'm on a corner lot with a major highway running past the house. The garage door will face south (towards the maroon car).

Good move. I was travelling through Chicago a couple weeks ago and from the train took note of all the garages with the doors facing alleys. I would be very uncomfortable knowing I couldn't see my garage door from the house.
