Change stacked toolboxes to side-by-side?

I’d like some ideas and input to solve an issue I’ve recently become more annoyed with. I currently store my tools in a regular top/bottom stacked setup. I’ve always noticed that my box was a little too tall to comfortably work with and I think I’m ready to make a change.

I was thinking of building a cart that attaches to the side of my bottom box. I can put my top box on this cart and essentially have them side by side rather than stacked. I would keep them together as a solid unit rather than wheel them around separately. This setup would also expose the top surface of the bottom box which I’ll likely make a nice hardwood surface for storing tools on and for a general work surface. I’d probably have to build a new common plate/board to mount 4 new castors to. I think this change would be an improvement in every way and would probably improve the way I store my tools.

Does anyone have any photos of this or maybe some other suggestions?

I like the idea. I have a setup like you have and never did like working out of it. I don't need to pile working stuff on it but like another bench. I would like one of those double drawer 44's and modify the top. Mine is really worn out. I finally stripped some stuff out which helped a lot.
Your side by side scheme would work for me.

A lot is based on the duty cycle, a closed box like that would survive some fire and water damage. If its a daily user it would be too slow, ours is used at any time of day every day.

This is my personal setup that I have at home, I keep it closed when doing woodworking to keep the dust out but it's always open otherwise. If you have any ideas on how to excute the side by side design I'd love some input.
