I want to change a basement room lights with 3-way switches and stairway light with 3-way switches to a 4-way switch set up and control both room and stairway lights. I've gotton the 4-way switch to work, but only controls the room lights. I got to tie together the room lights "load" wire with the stairway light "load" wire, and they're in different boxes. I've managed to get a wire from the stairway light down to the box with the room light "load" wire. Is it OK to have a single wire in the wall? It's not "romex", 2 wire w/ground, but a single 14 AWG soild wire.

No it is not okay to have a single wire in the wall. All wires must be part of a cable assembly or in conduit.

AND all conductors of the circuit must be in the same cable or conduit. So even if he got another romex ran, he couldnt use one wire in it for his 3rd wire. This is a good application for some sort of X10 thing.
