This is probably the stupidest question or the easiest fix . . .but it has me stumped. How do you take the old pad off? I think it unscrews . . .but I don't have any way to get a wrench in between the pad and plate to where the pad screws into the bolt. Is there a special tool or trick?:dunno:

Peel up that rubber skirt around above the backer pad and you'll see what you need. Find a thin wrench that fits, I have a Sioux 5" that I put a 6" pad on. I think it was a 9/16" or 5/8" wrench, but I had to borrow the wrench from my boss so I forget. Pretty sure it was right hand thread, but I forget that too.

If you're referring to a D/A palm sander, when sold new a purpose-specific wrench is included. It is maybe 1mm or 1.5mm thick so it is able to reach between the backing pad and sander body. Seems like my Mac uses a 26mm, the wrench for my Dynabrade was smaller.

Ritter is right, you'll be able to see the nut more easily.
