I have the small Channellock pliers, and the CMan version. The CMan is also spring loaded. Both do an excellent job of grabbing anything round, including oil filters. The teeth are aggressive enough that they will scratch filters, so I only use these to remove filters and use something else to install.

I like mine. I believe HD sells these. Sears also has a Craftsman version.

Correct. I recently bought some from Home Depot. As a funny aside... I saw them in the store and wondered if I'd ever use them if I bought them. With in a couple days I was changing the oil on my truck and it would have been the perfect situation for them since the filter was stuck on. I picked up one soon after.

I have them and they are ok, I find I have trouble on some of the machines I work on to get them into place. Other then that I would say 8 out of 10.

Personal preference, I guess. I only them an 1/8 of a turn or so more, I find comfort in that little bit extra. On my truck, its hard to my hands on the filter so I usually have a filter cup socket out anyways.

Why are you using anything other than your hand to tighten oil filters?

I have the channellock #209 filter wrench and like it alot. They're small and fit in most tight spaces.

I don't like the plier type ones at all, I can never seem to get them in where I need to. I have a full range (2" -8") of lisle band clamp style filter wrenches and a strap wrench and much prefer them.

However, if you only need them to work on a couple of applications, and they do, I'm sure they'd be fine.

I have 2 different sizes of these pliers and while they're handy in ways, but they tear and twist the living snot out of filter. I've used them on about every brand of filter (John Deere, Wix, Napa Gold, Fram, OEM Toyota) and they've done above equal damage to each. I change the oil in about 45 different vehicles on our farm, filters of all different sizes, and all filters are put on only hand-tight. Don't get me wrong, these things will get where a lot of other filter wrenches won't, but I've found myself wondering what I was going to do when the filter was twisted like a rope and still not coming off. You don't have a lot of other options at that point.

All that being said, filters are basically made of tobacco tin nowadays so I really can't blame it entirely on the pliers.

I have the small 209 channellocks and they work where it's difficult to get the band type to work. If you have a small filter then your band type needs quite a bit of turning room before it grabs the filter, the pliers don't need the extra room.

To the OP I could not open your link, but have used these for years and they work excellent w/o crushing the filters. They are from HF, around $10, less on sale. They work like vise grips.

Ive got the full set of oil filter pliers,They work good ,and im happy with them, but like all tools, some just fit better in places than others do.What NOT TO DO with them is grip it in the middle of the filter.I loaned mine out and i didnt tell him this and he, for some reason had to pull so hard and collaspe the filter to tighten it of all things. So if you do it now dont blame me.......lol..........he did......lol..............YG

I have 2 different sizes, bought both off the tool truck. I like them, they are great for tight places. I try not to use them for installing filters though, they dent the can.

I have several different pairs of oil filter pliers the channellock are ok but as the others have said sometimes hard to use in tight places. Years ago I bought a facom oil filter pliers (Must have grown legs) think of a filter strap band that you tighten with a round knob on the bottom best tool that I ever owned.

i typically use band type filter wrenches for most of my applications, but these work great on my harley, the short filter is mounted between the battery box and rear jug, almost sitting n top of the trans. no room for band type wrench or a end cup wrench.
some of the equipment i work on is getting cramped for space, and filters are getting tucked into some virtually inaccessable places, using the pliers i can grab them from underneath and get em loose
