I walked in off the street and grabbed 3 sets for $9.99 ea about a month ago. I believe the packaging is changing on these so they're blowing out the old ones.

yeah, maybe it is only at select stores. the lowes near me are now carrying the upgraded model which is the E series with improved leverage and have stopped selling the 338 model

I order 1 pair from a local Lowe's that showed 1 in stock.
They called back that they had it, but it wasn't it didn't have original packaging so they would take a few bucks off.

$6.99 + tax. (No packaging at all.)

Before heading over I checked for other items on sale.

They showed some Kobalt lineman pliers on sale for $0.99, some snap ring pliers for $5 and a few other items 80% off. They had pulled all the clearance stuff to an end cap and it had almost all been snapped up. I got the snap ring pliers. I think the tool guy felt bad that I was looking for the lineman pliers that were gone so he took another $2 off without prompting.

Also got a couple pairs of $0.25 scissors.

It might not be the packaging that's changing.. I'm pretty sure these models are permantely discontinued (338) in favor of the new model (e338). It's a higher leverage model. Longer handles, smaller rivet, differently shaped jaws. They favor higher leverage with their whole "XLT" series over a wide jaw opening for the 8" cutters.. I like the older ones better I think. You can see the newer model in the middle of my drawer. I upgraded all my cheap pliers to channellock in this cart.
