Channelock oil filter pliers

Bought these a few weeks ago because I do a fair amount of oil changes on all different types of stuff. I love them, so much easier than grabbing an oil filter wrench, and struggling to fit it into tight places. wish i bought them a long time ago. its also nice that just the one pair will fit jsut about all size filters.

Yeah, I don't own any filter wrenches, just pliers. The Mac branded set I have will do about anything I see except for the super large displacement Caterpillar's.

That said, the filter wrenches do have their place, but if I was stranded on a desert island and forced to do oil changes, and only allowed one filter removal tool, it would be the pliers.

I think I am going to get the channellock pliers. Which size should I get? The big ones or the small ones? I will be using them on cars and light trucks.

Check the diameter of your oil filters and see which size fits.

I have the KD Tools version in two sizes. Between the pliers and my filter spider, there isn't a filter I haven't been able to get off. The spider works in tight locations and on really stuck filters.

I don't think any of my cars ever had enough access for filter pliers! Not even the Exploder.

I got a pair, on sale from Tooltopia, for my Ranger & Chevy truck. Both have smaller size filters and they're tight to get to, but the smaller size plier gets 'em both off easily.

Many years ago maybe in the Dark ages, I had a Facom filter wrench; the kind that you put over the filter and then at the bottom of the tool you turned a knob in order to tighten the strap.
Best filter wrench that money could buy,but alas mine grew legs and took a walk!

im on the same boat as fletcher. im a weekend warrior and have mainly changed oil on japanese cars so far, those pliers have never been able to fit anywhere. Ive always ended up using the spider filter wrench someone mentioned earlier.

I've got a pair of the oil filter pliers, but have never used them on an oil filter. I have used them a lot on 2" PVC pipe unions though. They are most excellent for that!

I have the small ones and they were a pain in the *** to use on my raised 99 tahoe. I could not get a good grip on the smaller handle. I am going to get the larger ones.

I've got a pair of them too. The only time they don't work well is if you take your vehicle to a quick lube and they have the biggest gorilla on duty tighten your filter.

I know what you mean on the Exploder - I use that type of plier but go from the top. It isn't easy but the filter is only hand accessible from below.
BTW - that's an 07 with the 4.6L V8.

I use a pair of filter pliers I got for $5 at Auto Zone a few years ago. They look like the KD/Channellock ones but with thinner jaws.

My dad has to use a cap wrench to get the filter off his Frontier...after he jacks it up and takes the right front tire off.

I have that same Facom filter wrench .. works great if these is alot of room ..

Tried using them on my John Deere 7510, filter caved in around the threads, spent half an hour chiseling it off. Old metal strap type wrench I found laying in a scrap pile still works every time.
