Hey guys,
So my old VAT20 finally kicked the bucket after umpteen years. i've gone online looking for a unit with similar capabilities and either i'm missing something or just not looking in the right place.

i'm seeing a bunch of handheld testers that test batteries and system voltage, but i'm looking for a unit that can test alternator amperage output and starter amperage draw in addition to load testing batteries. you know like a good old VAT40 or similar...

the only carbon pile testers i see are for batteries only.

whats out there?

Damn you're good. That's the way to check this stuff out. I have not seen a unit like the VAT-40 for ages. Snap-On bought Sun out years ago so a lot of Snap-On testers used the VAT40 operation but it may broaden your search. All I've found are the carbon pile battery testers so you can at least add the load you want with a digital volt meter attached

I have been looking at some of the new Snap-on battery testers since I had the same question. I was asking some of these questions in the thread linked below:

I have been looking at the Snap-on EECS350 and trying to get some more information on it. It says it test the charging system but I am not sure what is it doing in the background. I one video I found shows it doing a charging test and the unit walks the user through a procedure of applying load to the battery by changing the engine RPM and turning the blower fan and lights on and off.

I would be interested in know what tester you end up going with.

I know there is someone who restores and sells older sun testers. I think he is in Ohio, just google him.
