Found this gem laying in the barn yesterday afternoon. I've probably walked passed it and tripped over it 100 times in my life but never paid much attention to it. That is until I joined GJ and got an obsession for anything and everything old and made in USA. Anyway, after reading this thread last night I decided to pull it out and get some more information. According to [URL="http://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/1093596-post27.html" ]this[/URL] it's a Parker Eclipse Machinists Vise and retailed for $20. It will probably be awhile before I get it cleaned up and in use, as my shop is still sitting in crates on the ground.

Under that rust, that Parker seems to be in very nice condition. That one is a good candidate for Electrolysis.

Grats on the Parker find! That is a very nice vise and will provide you with lots of rust floating to the electrodes in your ****** bath. The great thing about electrolysis is that the laundry soap from Arm and Hammer makes your shop smell laundry fresh. It's sort of like the pine tree on your car mirror.

Thanks for all of the replies. I'm definitely excited to try electrolysis on this thing. It will be my first time giving it a go, but with a little luck it will turn out.

The stuff I stumble on in my old barn is probably truly junk. You were stumbling over gold all these years!

You'd be amazed some of the stuff I stumble upon at my place. My Grandfather's been collecting 'treasures' for 76 years now, and he's got quite the collection. The only problem is talking him into handing it over! As time goes on and my shop build develops I plan on utilizing some very old, very eccentric, and very functional pieces of history.

I have a suggestion for you on that old stuff around the barn...

Let your grandfather be a part of the buildup of your garage...especially the decoration and equipment.

Ask your grandfather for nostalgic stuff, like old photos of him fooling around with his garage stuff, or cars, equipment, etc. Tell him you want to celebrate his history in your own shop. Hang some photos of him on the walls, and invite him over to see it. Make sure you have that vise and any other old tools or equipment out on display too. You'll love the history yourself, and he will love the fact that his history is being preserved in this fashion.

I can tell you from experience that as we old farts get older, we like to hang on to our history, and remember when we were young and strong and active. He just might get a kick out of the fact that you are keeping, restoring, and displaying his old stuff, and keeping his memories alive...

I know I wish my sons liked my old tools, cars, and equipment. Sigh.

Thank you, great advice. He's definitely part of the entire project. He helped me do all of the dirt work for the pad and will continue to help me complete it. It will definitely make the shop that more special to my by preserving his history in it as well. I hadn't had that aspect on the whole thing until now. Once again, thanks.
