Hi folks: Caught the resto-vise bug from you guys and now have a second restoration candidate...a 23X, 4 inch Charles Parker machinist vise from about 1910. Don't know how much to offer seller who is a friend but while cleaning the static jaw casting, I noticed a seam or crack at what appears to be the mold junction? How bad is this at that location and is it really worth restoring and keeping for my collection? Is this a common flaw from manufacturing?

Thanks,

I have the same vise and I do not believe that is a parting line from the casting as I do not recall seeing one on mine. I would guess that it is possibly an impact crack. If you can see where the crack stops, you can drill an 1/8" to 3/16" through hole just past that area which will help the crack from spreading further. Re-machine and refinish the worst areas don't use it like an anvil like someone has previously and you should have a nice piece. Value and what to pay, that is up to you.
