Hello ,
my name is Joe , I'm from Scranton Pa. Here's my question . I have a Chas. Parker vise ,made in Meriden , Ct. . Model # 974 . On the front top their is a small brass plate stamp with ,
The E. A. Kinsey . Co.
Machinery
Cincinnati Ohio
The vise overall works great , but like any tool it shows it's age . I'm hoping somebody can put a value to it . I noticed that people do collect them and I would like to get it into a collectors hands . I will try to get pictures if needed thanks Joe

Pictures would really help. Condition is everything... The 974 was a common model, but the Parkers are pretty collectable.

Yes let's see some pics! I bet that brass plate is from the shop that owned and used that vise.

Just do a search for "Parker 974" on eBay and click on "Sold Listings"...

$150-$200 is the usual range... Some a little higher, some a little lower. But that's eBay prices...

I'd pay $200 for that 974 all day long.

Hell, I don't mind paying $200-250 for the Union-made Parker's in great condition!

Not sure if you were looking at the one that sold for "$200" with best offer accepted. The accepted price was $100.

Yeah, I'm having seller's remorse on my union 974-1/2B... I sold it to a friend, and he uses it daily, but damn I really liked that vise... I think it's the little friction adjustment for the handle that is my favorite feature, you can keep the handle centered and spin it open / close real fast, but still easy to pull it to one end to get full leverage. Also the drum style brake setup for the swivel base is slick.

Papa: good luck on your sale and thanks for offering up the Parker before you listed it. i know you'll need 100 posts before you can actually list one here in the classifieds so hopefully you'll stick around to share information and comments on the many other threads you might have knowledge to add.

good luck.

ALL: he didn't hide the fact that he wanted to sell it. did anybody PM him with an offer before he decided to list it on Ebay?

with Tejass saying it was worth $250 and if Papa didn't get an offer and wanted to sell the vise wouldn't any of you list it on Craigslist or on Ebay if you have an account?

looks like a nice vise, but with shipping on top of his BIN at $170 it might sit for a while or find a home and he'll probably lower his price if it doesn't sell or if a local guy doesn't buy it.

Papa: PM (private message) me if you get a 6 inch or wider jaw one or if you have any vise questions. sorry i don't need another 4 inch wide jaw vise and you are not quite local to me over here in Seattle. i'm actually starting to sell a few of my smaller ones now.

you'll learn quite a bit about tools and how to use them if you stick around, but you also might end up wanting to own more than you might use in a couple lifetimes. Can't tell you why exactly so let's go with just "because".

good luck

i never knew vises were so collectable.

Vices aren't generally collectable per se. On here, there is a concentrated opinion due to the simple fact that there are quite a few vice collectors and flippers on here. Certain vices do always command interest and likely are sought after, but in general, most people class a vice as eactly what it is, namely a workshop tool, and just buy and use according to their needs rather than appreciating the finer points of vices.
