Chas Parker 974 1/2 restoration

With great inspiration from gregthor's 974 1/4 restoration thread, advice from Catalyze and Outlaw as well as Spongerich's thorough electrolysis thread, I set out to strip, clean, prime, paint, lube and detail a Chas Parker 974 1/2.

The electrolysis peeled the paint off such that a little wire brush encouragement finalized the paint removal. Grease gunk required more wire brush scrubbing with grease removal stuff. I've sandblasted a Wilton and after this electrolysis experience, I will NOT sandblast again.

Primed with Rustoleum Self Etching Primer and painted with Hammered Verde Green. Then painted the letters with a very fine brush using satin black.

Following gregthor's lead, lubed exclusively with Permatex Anti-Seize.

As you can see, the collar is not original. My plan is to do a bronze cast of the collar from a Chas Parker 272 original and adapt it to retrofit it (not the same collar design). We'll see how well that goes.

The jaws are offsett side-to-side just a bit. Don't know how that happened as pinning the jaws is quite rigid.

Fun learning experience. If you know anybody in the SF Bay Area who would enjoy owning this, send a PM. I have to sell one in order to buy another.

Nice finish job, I'll be interested in what you come up with on the cast bronze collars. That would probably sell, even to people with good collars!

I posted the cast bronze collar project on my Chas. Parker 272 thread. Just in case anyone is checking this thread and not seen it, here is the result.

Before I post on Craigslist, I'm checking to see if anyone here is interested.

Since I don't want to learn how to ship, my priority is for someone in the SF Bay area to buy for themselves or on behalf of someone else out there.

On that "local pickup" basis, $150. Based on one I saw on Ebay that went for $258+shipping, I hope it's reasonable.

Please let me know by PM if you are interested.

I think $150 is fair. I live in the Bay Area but already have a Chas Parker. Wish I'd painted mine verde green, to see yours. Have you thought about hitting it with a $20 rattle can of SprayMax 2k clear? Very nice and tough finish over Rustoleum, I did that with a Reed that I restored.

I bought some Valspar clear stuff when I started the project but haven't used it. Any opinions on Valspar vs. the Spraymax? Or is one clear coat the same as the next?

Is the Valspar clear an enamel or urethane? Can't speak to it, but I can give a thumbs up on the SprayMax, which is an ingenious 2k rattlecan design. You only get about 8 hours to use it up when you activate it, and I'd say you only need ~1/2 the can for a vise that size. So if you have some smaller items that need the treatment batch them up.

It really made a difference with my vise; the coating is much, much tougher than just with the Rustoleum silver I sprayed on.

Unclear (no pun intended) from the can so it took me awhile to search the web for the answer -- it's enamel so it seems reasonable. If I were going to keep it I'd give it a whirl. Since I'm selling this, I don't think I'll invest any more though I'll suggest it to whoever ends up with it.

And I'll check out the SprayMax stuff or any other clear finish comments that others have. Thanks.

Not to clutter up your thread btrnuthatch, but I've been wondering what would the difference be between a 974 and a 974 1/2? Nice job on the restoration and recast collar btw.
