Hello...
I have a Chas. Parker No. 88 vise. It is missing the single pipe jaw, the double-jaws are there. I wanted to fabricate the missing jaw. I made a template of the existing jaw(s) to transfer onto a piece of 1/2" piece of steel.
After getting the piece of steel into the basic shape, I set it up into my milling machine. At this point, I must explain....I am a very good metal fabricator, but not a proficient machinist. There is a difference between the two! Back in the day, many of my customers were machine shops, so I had them do any machining I needed done. Bottom line...my new piece isn't perfect, but will hold a pipe....
So, I machined the piece. Stuck it into it's slot, drilled the pin hole through it, then installed a new pin. Seemed pretty good.
Then I noticed that when looking down from the top, I noticed that the pipe jaws (original and my new one), protruded out beyond the regular vise jaws...
The factory jaws can be pivoted back to almost clear the main jaws..
And my new jaw pivots back, but not near enough to clear the main jaw...
It got me wondering, if I wanted to put (squeeze), let's say, a piece of square tube vertically into the vise, and I wanted it to rest on the slide bar, when I tighten the main jaws, they cannot make contact with the tube...the pipe jaws will.
So, I went online to see what these vises looked like originally. Much to my amazement, the single jaw extends out into the open space by inches! My piece isn't long enough!
Can anybody shed some light on this? Is the long jaw meant to be removable?
