hello. I've recently acquired and rehabbed 2 Chas Parker bench vises. a model 2X and a model 5X. I'm curious to find out what approximate age these are. I don't think it's possible to get precise with manufacture dates. the only catalog I could find online is the 1912 catalog. both of these vises are in that catalog. does anyone have access to earlier and later catalogs? I assume if they are not listed in later catalogs that would indicate that they had been discontinued.

the 2X has a round meatball and the 5X has a cylindrical one. I assume that the cylindrical meatballs were a later design to save money. thanks.

thanks! I love the 1937 use and care handbook. never hit the handle with a hammer. never use a breaker bar on the handle. broken those rules one many vices. I have only been using my 2X for a week or so and have noticed it really locks down without using those cheater methods. haven't tried the 5X yet as I just got the 2nd coat of paint on it last night. it's a monster though so no doubt it will lock down.

went thru all this. the model 2X was in the 1905 thru 1914 catalogs but none open as far as mine (9") so mine must be in later catalogs. I could only find the model 5X in the 1912 catalog but that one shows it with a round meatball and mine is cylindrical so must also be in a later catalog.PXL_20231230_224518678.MP.jpgPXL_20231231_160821165.MP2.jpgPXL_20240101_180858752.MP.jpgPXL_20240102_162242095.MP.jpgPXL_20240103_171401922.MP.jpgPXL_20240104_214419048.MP2.jpgPXL_20240108_215310882.MP.jpgPXL_20240110_153207157.MP.jpgPXL_20240110_161431606.MP.jpg

Not sure, but I think you are over stating your max opening size.

Usually it's visible as the amount of the slide showing when fully closed.

Measured as the maximum opening with the thread fully engaged in the nut. (Screw threads are not recessed in the nut)

Looking at your closed pix, I don't see 9" of slide hanging out the back end, tho scale could be messing with me.

see links below. the link for the 5X does not list jaw opening for some reason but mine opens to 14" with the lead screw still engaged. obviously, you don't want to crank down on something hard with the lead screw barely engaged so I would say working jaw opening would be 13 inches or so.

you got me curious though, so I just went out to the shop and measured the 2X. it is barely engaged at 8 1/4 inches so I was incorrect. probably would be considered a 7" opening to operate safely. as to the length of the slide sticking out the back, not relevant as the lead screw nut in parker vises is in the front/center of static section, not at the end.PXL_20231209_204323437.MP2.jpgPXL_20231230_224015506.MP.jpgPXL_20240117_004628635.MP.jpgPXL_20240117_004714842.MP.jpg

Vises opening capacity are measured with the nut fully engaged with the screw shaft.

You can measure yours however you want, but the catalogs are done with full engagement, so you won’t find your vise using your measurements.

thanks so much. restoring the 2 vises was a lot of fun. I used the 5X for some work holding for this little Rockwell refurb.
