I am new to this site and registered because of the knowledge about the Chase Parker 974 Vise. If, someone could please help answer my question it is much appreciated. My father gave me this vise and I noticed something odd about it. If you look at the picture you will see a washer behind the plate. Does that belong there? I took the washer out for the picture.Thank you for the help.

I think you mean Chas (short for Charles) Parker. I have a Parker 804 1/2 and it does not have a washer behind the collar. It does have a few very thin washers under the main screw head to adjust the gap between the back side of the collar and the shoulder on the main screw head - to lessen the backlash.

The washers are used to adjust the backlash in the spindle screw....Some vises need them and some don't....It boils down to how the vise was designed and how it wore over the years....You may need to add or subtract washers when you refurbish a vise....
