Chaz Parker 974 value?

Hi guys, a friends father is selling a chas Parker 974 vise and is asking $70 for it. Is this a decent asking price for it? I need a decent vise for the shop and didn't want Chinese stuff. Thanks for helping a noob out.

Any pics? Do you know the condition? If nothing is broken and the jaw inserts are in pretty good shape I'd say that's a great price for a 60lb vise especially if it still has the swivel base attached. That's barely over $1/lb which is a good buy considering what vises are selling for

No pics unfortunately. He says the jaws are decent. And no cracks or defects. I think I may just roll the dice. If it's **** hopefully I can atleast get my money back.

It most likely won't be **** unless it was seriously beat on. I've owned a couple Charles Parker vises and they're all incredibly well made and heavy duty and have very smooth slide action. If you need a vise that's a good price

I'd say you did estremely well. You have a fairly late model vise, as Parkers go, (1950's, maybe early '60's?), built when they were still a best quality vise. That one, under the rust, appears to be little-used and not damaged from abuse, as so many vises are found to be.

I'd suggest that you have it completely apart, get the parts gently glass-blasted, or, better yet, soda-blasted, to surely remove all the rust, then mask, prime, and paint.

With reasonable care, that vise will last your lifetime, and, should you have descendants, could become a family heirloom.

Yep, you did outstanding provided everything is good. You'll know for sure once you tear it down for restoration.

Here is what it will look like after you restore yours. I went with the light blue but you can choose just about any color that you want.

Seventy is a great price plus you got the original wrench . They clean up well. My biggest/best is a Parker 955

nice vice... I have a parker NO. 204 it weighs about 70 lbs and is hands down the best vice I have ever owned.. however I have never seen or can not find another 204... can anybody help me find out anything about it ? it is posted on my account if you want to look at it. I just cannot find any info on it

That will clean up nicely, and you did well at that price. I'd buy every one I could in that condition at that price...can't go wrong.

Great Deal not a fan of sand blasting seems to do something wired to the cast. I prefer just using a wire wheel but that is just me. That one is so clean I would just use electrolysis get the rust off clean the jaws and lube it. I have one in similar shape and use it daily. It is one of my favorite vises and I have five vises I use. You will love how the swivel lock operates.
