I started this thread. So there are pros and cons for using jack stands vs cribbing. I learned some things and found out lots of people use cribbing. I also own jack stands, it's not like I'm too cheap to buy them. So I went back to the guy who first showed me the cribbing idea and asked him why he uses cribbing vs jack stands. On that cobra the frame rails are pretty close to the centerline of the car, so placing jack stands under the frame rails provides a very narrow and unstable setup. And cribbing provides a lot of space for working under the car, like pulling the ****** which he did. He still uses jack stands as backup but puts them outboard under areas that are not ideal structurally for jack stands but good enough for a safety backup. He works with some guys that do restorations and says most of their vehicles spend time on cribbing at some point.

I built some of these when I tore down my Camaro. I made each corner out of 2 separate boxes that bolt together with 3/4" bolts. One box is 6", one box is 9" and when the are together they are around 14" tall. I have used them on different cars, and I built them so that my jack stands will fit on top of them. I would rather do this instead have the jack stand at its highest setting.

I like to have the option of crib or jack stands or ramps.Whatever you use, remember SAFETY.Crib is safer than a jack stand fully extended, In this thread its kind of like comparing apples and oranges as there is no wrong answer, depends on what you are fixing.
