Cheap Harbor Frieght grider failure, video

Here is a link to the video I posted to youtube. Tons of people these days tearing down brand new tools and guessing how they will fail. Well my grinder finally died on me. Was grinding down a bolt head, and the trigger let go.
After prolly 5 years, of weekend use. And not really caring about it. I think I got my money's worth.
It's amazing how people think the **** bearings or the brushes would fail. But really they all looked fine to me.
I'll most likely grab the new Hercules grinder they have. I want something with more torque.

Side note: wedding rings are finger removers in the shop. I recommend you find a safe way to store it - a nail on a wall, for example - and take it off every time you work in the garage.

My buddy bought one. It turned 100 rpm.

The thing w the bottom dollar grinders is balance and vibration. There have finally been a couple threads on the board where people other than myself have realized it. I’ve been preaching it for years. The irony is that an entry level Porter Cable isn’t that expensive at all and WAY smoother than the low end HF stuff.

Now from what little I know the Hercules is not bottom-of-the-barrel and should be fine. Last I knew I thought the Hercules was spendy at $50-ish (I haven’t researched pricing recently) and you could get two “pretty good” PC’s for that. If I was gonna drop $50 on a grinder it still wouldn’t be Hercules. I’d look to Makita or maybe DeWalt or Ridgid.

Also cords. Granted the PC I mentioned doesn’t get a great cord but the higher end grinders get longer, flexible cords. Never handled a Hercules so dunno what their cords are like.

The bottom dollar units come with what seems like a 3’ cord that’s only flexible at temps above 90 degrees

I still have one of the orange grinders they used to make. I've been using it for about 15 years, 2 pretty heavily. I replaced the brushes once, and broke the switch in half and separated the housing from dropping it a few times. Some black tape and it's still going strong.

I also have one of those in the bottom drawer that I have not used in some time. I don't need it now that I have the cordless stuff. Maybe I should tare it down? I have smoked it also but it still works. It's not very powerful.

let me rephrase it... The old orange one, now puke red one is work-able... just needed to re-grease when it gets loud after some time. They are definitely not Metabo by any means.. but will do the job fine... The same drill master grinder I have shakes the cartilage out of my fingers and joints after 5 minutes of continuous use. It is ****.
The orange one, motor is decent, just the gear is really loose spec... if you took the head off , and run the motor it's pretty smooth.

I have one of those $10 grinders and it's more than paid for itself. Instead of a thermal cutoff, I think they get so physically hot you just have to put them down when working them hard, lol. Mine got so hot one day when constantly using it that it melted the rubber coating on the palms of my gloves.

I have a few of the bottom-of-the-line PC's, and I think they're the exact same as some of the HF's I've seen.

Those orange ones aren't bad. I still have 3

I stick to my Makita grinders, for 5 years use that HF grinder looked hardly used on the outside and pretty clean on the inside, mine look much worse than that after a few months and are usually right full of masonry dust as well. Average about 10 years of life and I usually run 3 grinders on the van at any given time.
