Anyone have a decent place to buy casters.

looking for probably 4x2's for a welding table. Need 2 to have brakes, maybe all 4.

Looks like heavy duty casters run about $24 a piece on ebay, which is a bit more than I wanted to spend.

Harbor freight has some nice 5x1, and 5x2's for like $6 and $16 respectively, but neither of them have wheel brakes.

Also checked menards, and they dont' have any larger casters with brakes

Home Depot has 4" tall suface mount casters for $8 each.. i think 300lbs a piece (1200lbs total).

casters are 4" tall, and the surface mount plate is 3"x4".. with wheel brakes.
is the surface mount where you need 2"x4"?

they have 6" casters for $15 each, and higher capacity.

these are the hard black rubber wheels, which will be ok for welding, but you'll want to watch the slag.. especially with torching.

Thanks, I'll check it out on the way home.

Harbor Freight has some with a cast iron inside wheel and a rubber coating/tire. I like them alot for a cheaper caster, pretty good load rating and they roll smooth and quiet. Not very good for welding though

Yes, very nice for the money, these were the one's I was talking about in the original post. Too bad they don't have them with brakes though.

I just bought a set of 4x2 swivel/locking casters from Grizzly for like $12 each.

Thanks, exactly what I was looking for = ordered.

Do you have yours? Anyway you could measure a diagram of the mounting holes? Would like to get a head start on drilling the mounting plates if at all possible.

I bought a few sets on Ebay from "Overstock Casters" for various projects in my garage and am very pleased. They have many choices to choose from and have a nice detailed site on Ebay. Check it out

Lee Valley has some very nice 4 & 5 inch castors in the $12-$18 dollar range. Brakes also lock the swiveling action so your work table etc stays in one place instead of swinging back and forth on the castors swivels.

I have four suggestions for buying casters:

1) My favorite ones come from an eBay store called "Access Casters":

http://stores.ebay.com/Access-Casters

They are high quality and I like the locking red ones. They are a good price for new, quality units. I have used the 6" red locking casters for my heavy welding table and a heavy surface plate.

2) For cheap industrial quality (sometimes used), Surplus Center has great prices and good service:

http://www.surpluscenter.com/wheels.asp?catname=wheels

Not a huge selection but very good prices

3) The very best casters are IMHO Atlas Casters:

http://www.atlascasters.com/

Not at all cheap but check them out, they are very nice. I use these when I want the best.

4) For cheap casters that are readily available, Harbor Freight ones are fine. Not that nice but for smaller casters a fine value.

I have bought some from the surplus center and they were OK.

I have purchased 40 from this ebay supplier and have been really happy with them. I bought the 4 inch maroon wheel with locks on all four. I have them mounted on lateral file cabinets, and a couple are nearly fully loaded and they work just fine. I made an offer of $5 each and got it accepted both times i bought.

Link to their ebay store below.

Caster City is good. Just bought the ones for my welding table with swivel brakes and locks at Magnus Industries. It was convenient since the are 5 minutes from my house.

Ya get what you pay for.

Amen.

I looked at stuff like this but there were a few issues:
- The material wasn't kind to my flake epoxy floor.
- I couldn't weld directly to the caster without screwing up the swivel bearing. I would have had to make my own plates to bolt to.
- That's a cheap brake and won't hold my heavy table.

castercity.com

^ This. Caster City is great and they have consultants who can help pick out the right material and caster size for one's floor, the size of joints/cuts in the floor, etc. They also sell perfectly matched welding plates for all their casters.

I know there have several solutions already posted, but since its the internet, I'll add in my 2 cents...

One thing to keep in mind for the future... a place like Indianapolis (or any decent size city) will have at least a few industrial supply companies with a walk-in counter or showroom where you can go and get real industrial quality items like casters. The only hard part is they are usually only open 9-5, M-F. When I go to the place a few miles down the road, I just tell the lady at the front desk what I'm looking for and what I'd like to keep the price around, and she usually finds me a couple of options. Also, don't let the online prices scare you, they usually will give you a discount for buying it in person. Way better prices/quality vs. what they sell at big box stores.

I buy mine at the farm store [boomgards] I buy 4 lite duty at a time. We have recycling in our town in tubs & I put 4 on the tub & wheel out to the curb. Our drive has some slope & when there is snow on it, gets slick.

It really depends on how heavy the load is and how much you need to move it.

In general I only design casters for 50% of load capacity when using high quality name brand castors. Meaning if you have four 500 lb rated casters I would only load them to 1000lbs max. If using Harbor Freight I would load them even less due to concerns of variation in quality.

As far as wheel material goes, I like Phenolic as it has high load capacity and it still easy to roll. A lot of the more eastomeric casters deform enough enough under high load that they are hard to move.

If the load is heavy and you need to move it more than once, I would recommend larger diameter caster wheel. It really makes a difference on easy of moving.

Wheel locks are a good idea, but consider access to the lock. I like Colson casters with the large lock coming out the back of the caster (see last photo). It is much easier to lock and unlock compared to side locking casters. But note I am not a fan of the the two piece (red/grey) caster wheel as shown below. I have seen too many of them fail under load due to age. The failure is the red "tire" comes off completely in red chunks when you attempt to move it.

Usually I use 2 fixed casters and two swivel casters with locks. Four swivel casters is a pain to push straight but can be useful in tight quarters if you have two people maneuvering it.

There can be deals on Ebay, but be very careful. Now that Ebay will let you protest not as expected condition shipments easier, you have some protection. But below are pictures of supposedly "as new" Colson casters I received on eBay. I suppose they were new before the flood.
