Since I didnt see it mentioned anywhere. Was this a hammer drill, or a cheap rotary/sds type tool?

Hammer drills ****, they are worthless regardless of brand.

My bosch sds bulldog extreme (whaterver else cliche name is on it) however has worked quite well for every hole Ive had to drill in concrete. It was also cheaper than a HF model because I knew I needed one from time to time and decided to cruise for that hot deal when I did not need it right away. Thats usually my strategy, Buy tools before I need them and I can afford to wait for killer deals.

My strategy as well.

I've got personal projects, the wife's projects, and paying projects planned well in advance...so it affords me this strategy.

If there's something down the road, I can always be shopping around.

The Quote below is always in the back of my mind when I purchase tools... But I am a Tool guy that likes the best Quality I can afford....

Remember the Quote from John Ruskin

“There is hardly anything in the world that someone cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price alone are that person’s lawful prey.

It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money — that is all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do.

The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot — it can’t be done. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.”

John Ruskin

Money does not always equal quality either. I bought a Bosch circular saw a couple months ago - it was a total piece. Replaced it with a less-expensive Makita and I couldn't be happier with it.

Cheap, expensive, and everything in between - what matters is you buy what's right for what you'll be using it for and educate yourself first. To me, spending a ton of money for no reason is almost as bad as going cheap every time.

This ^^^^ Expensive does not always guarantee quality, even from a good brand. This seems to be more common these days.
