Hi all,

I want to weld some weathering steel for garden bed/planter separation around my house (steel edging). I have a number of landscape projects but the first is the edging. I have a garden plot and and few square/rectangular plots I'd like to edge.

I'm looking at the .06" hot rolled weathering steel for this application. I've never welded before so I was hoping some of you would have a suggestion for a cheap setup. The first one I plan on building is a roughly 10 x 10 garden plot.

I found welding tips n tricks on youtube but I wanted to ask the forum for advice. Thanks in advance for any help!

Cheap.. go to Harbor Freight and pick up one of their flux core MIG's. Then go to home crapo and pick up a roll of Lincoln NR-211 flux core wire. The wire from HF *****.

Run the MIG on the LOW setting and have at it. I did the exhaust on my old truck with this welder and it did a decent job. The welds won't look pretty, but they'll be functional. You could also pick up an angle grinder to dress up your welds, rattle can it and no one will be the wiser.

^^^that sounds right. .06" is pretty thin stuff. Its gonna take some practice to not blow right through it.

Really don't have any idea of what you are trying to do but what about some self tapping screws. And yadontstoya haveto buy a welder.

I would try to organize something you could bend corners with (big vise + deadblow hammer) and use something like hex bolts or button-head screws. For a middle-splice I'd cut the steel and scab in a splice plate. Same thing, nuts and bolts. Depending if you ever want to take it apart you could go with brass nuts at SS fasteners. If you don't care just use unplated steel. A drill + bit and some boxes of nuts & bolts is going to be a lot cheaper than a welder, if this is the only use for it...

Not sure what you're doing to me it sounds like bender boards around a garden plot, I think that one of the Harbor Freight spot welders might be a goog choice.
