Cheaper epoxy under the workbench

Tomorrow I'm set to use gray Epoxy-Coat (EC) on my garage and attached storage shed. I miscalculated total square footage of the two spaces, and I think I'm about 60 square feet short (using a generous application). I have the floor prepped and I need to lay the EC asap b/c we are going out of town and I need to move everything back into the garage before we go. Time is my enemy, so I can't order a half-kit of from Epoxy-Coat. If I had time that is what I'd do.

Another thing I could do, drive to Lowes and buy another full EC kit, but that would also be wasting a lot of material since I only need about 60sq ft. Not to mention the Lowes that stocks the EC is about an hour away. Time and money.

I'm thinking of using a cheaper epoxy from Home Depot, such as Rust Oleum, under the workbenches (that area is about 25 square feet) and on the floor of some storage racks in the shed (total of about 32 sq ft) for a total installation of cheapo epoxy of approximately 60 sq ft. These two areas will be mostly covered by tool chests and storage bins (respectively). This works in my time frame, is cheaper and wastes less materials.

Can the Rust Oleum (RO) be layered to overlap the Epoxy Coat or vice-versa? I could lay the RO down first, covering only the areas where it is less visible, and then lay the EC with about a 1 inch overlap.

Anyone know if there would be a problem with this approach?

Jon

I would ask EC.
We have an inexpensive waterborne epoxy for such tasks if you need it, free shipping too. http://legacyindustrial.net/cart/epoxy-coating-hd015-1-gal-p-207.html

Thanks Scotty. Would I be able to feather your product over an EC edge? It seems like if I am within the 18 hour window, the EC should be tacky enough to accept a topcoat.

I would hold off and do it all when you get back. Why rush and half *** the job?

You do not want to do this twice, and after a couple years with the rustoleum, I would not recommend it in a working type garage.

Yes- I'm starting to see the wisdom in this approach. The more I think about it, the more I don't want to mix some cheap stuff with "the good stuff" :bounce: .

Question: Has anyone coated 90% of their floor with epoxy and then coated the remaining 10% (or so) at a later time?

I'm thinking about finishing the majority of the garage now, moving my stuff back in & hitting the vacation highway. This way I can put all my tools, etc., back into the shop while I am gone. Then, in about two weeks, I could just lay down 60 sq ft of material and overlap with the other epoxy (I would sand the area where I'd overlap the new with old).

I would continue with the EC for such a little area. It's not worth messing with another product. Ask Christine for a touch-up kit or something.

Yes, a Touch up kit after vaca is the way to go, you can add that portion later. Call me if you have more questions on this.
