Want to install a 5000watt electric heater in my garage with a wall mounted 24 volt thermostat (so I can get a fancy programmable t-stat). What is cheapest option for such (without having to rewire say a Dayton G73 etc)?

You can get programmable line voltage t-stats as well. Just how fancy do you want?

Personally I'd use a contactor in addition to the thermostat. When breaking a 21A load, the contacts won't last forever. It would be cheaper/easier to replace the contacts on a contactor than a thermostat, I think.

That pretty much allows you to use any line voltage thermostat. Just have the thermostat control the contactor.

I suppose you could also use a solid state relay with a 240V control. Or if you want to run the thermostat on batteries, you could wire the battery voltage to the output on the thermostat and have it control the solid state relay that way.

Check out Chromalox's line of unit heaters. I purchased the 7.5KW in the LUH series, but the HVH is more affordable. You can get a 24v transformer and also a fan switch for summer use. I will be making a thread shortly about my install. I got mine from Electricheaterwarehouse.com and they were great to deal with. Sorry if the link doesn't work.

Fahrenheat Model # FUH54. I just used the built in thermostat and it works well in my 600 sq.ft. garage. Do a Google to get pricing under $300.00

AFAIK, there are no options - you buy a heater and roll your own t-stat setup. If you have an 8' ceiling, just use the built in t-stat. Works pretty well for me.

It was 46 outside last night and 75 inside, with the t-stat on LO
