Cheapest ebay plasma cutter review

I have been wanting a plasma cutter for a very long time. I cant count the number of times a working plasma unit would have been a life saver and of course I end up using saws or cut off wheels etc. Well I started seriously considering the Harbor Freight Plasma unit. It actually had very good reviews. But it was still $679 and even with the 20% off it wasnt cheap. I looked into the ebay plasma units and found mixed reviews. There are lots of youtube videos of these units working. I started searching ebay and amazon and finally found the Colossal Tech unit from a particular ebay seller USAPROVIDERSINC for the Cut 50 pilot arc plasma cutter http://www.ebay.com/itm/170848546058
It was $279 shipped. He added 18 consumables for $30 and put them in the same box. All shipping was free. I decided that the cost of the unit would be worth the risk so I bought the unit on ebay. It arrived in 5 days with the extra consumables in the box. The unit was different than the one in the ebay picture. The one I received appears to be a newer model with a digital readout to set the AMPS. Went to Lowes to get a 50 amp dryer plug and set it up in about 15 minutes.

I hooked up air, plugged it in and it worked perfect right out of the box. I made some practice cuts of various thickness steel pieces and had no issues. Keep in mind I have never used a plasma cutter before. I then set out to do the first project I needed to get done. Fabricate a small strap for my little tractor's hydraulic lift receiver. I used some guides to cut the straight parts and then did some free hand to cut holes. I was able to fab the part quick and then MIG welded it in place.

About 5 more projects like that and this unit will have paid for its self. For the weekend warrior this little set up may fit the bill. It states that it has a 1 year warranty but I bought this with the idea that it has no warranty. If it breaks within one year I will take the steps to test that "warranty" but I have doubts. I wouldnt rule it out though. But at $279 for what normally costs well north of $1200-$2400 IMO the risk is on me due to "buyer beware".

FYI this model is the Pilot Arc model. The pilot arc model makes and arc at the tip to start the plasma cut, It helps when cutting painted and rusty material and cuts down on prep of pieces to cut. I am an extreme amateur with fabrication and metal work...so take the info with a grain of salt. But I am happy as hell with my little Chinese plasma unit.

Here is a video of cutting the 14 or 16 gauge stuff I made the strap out of.

The thing that would concern me is availability of consumables. Are they compatible with another major brand or are they proprietary? I would get some spares NOW because you might not be able to find them in the future.

I got the Harbor freight dryer/filter combo as well as the little air operated shuttle valve drain setup for the compressor. Here in Florida water in the comp tank is a nightmare. Take a look at ebay when you type in plasma cutter...or Amazon. The chinese units are EVERYWHERE. Its actually shocking. There are so many of the same units re-branded under different names its scary. Consumables seem to be plenty. I will order a large set though. For $75 you can get like 100 consumables. That should last me the expected life of the unit...lol.

Part of the reason I bought the cheap unit was simply to see if a plasma cutter was something I actually needed. I may use it 20 times and take up another hobby. Who knows.

I am making a small front end loader for my John Deere 318 as well as a few other implements. If I have some failures i will be sure to report them.

I am in New Port Richey near Sr 54 and Little road.

I am sure the Chinese unit is no comparison. To be honest I would not even know the finer points to compare.:lol_hitti

Funny...as I was researching it dawned on me that the HF plasma was actually considered the high end of the low end lol. The one I bought was the low end of the low end. I am sure it would not hold up in a production shop. But it may very well last me quite a few years if I am gentle with it.

If you are in a neighborhood with uptight neighbors use it in your driveway. The Pasco County Sherrif response to " people with a volcano " is great.

Anyone else with one of these and some experience? I have a Miller Spectrum and it cuts sheet metal but I would like to be able to cut some plate at some point...

Any 40 amp will do the job. You want a pilot start cutter, but most are these days. Hypertherm is tops, but pricey. The HF is a good machine. I have a Longevity 452i, and it will cut 1/2", but most of my cutting is 1/4"-3/8" on the top end.

I don't own one YET but plan on getting one after Christmas, I spent a lot of time studying them and have run across more than a few guys on some other forums that have had the cut 50 running for more than 4 years with no problems, consumables seem to be no problem to get for them either. and this is as bad as bring up snap-on Vs HF. on any of the welding forums. so you end up wading through a lot of Fan-boy calling them chines Junk, but the guy's that have them seem to like them. and for me $ 259.00 vs $1500.00 for a Hypertherm that I may use only a couple time's a month is a no brainer.

I think someone needs to try to do a GROUP BUY!!! Wonder what price point we could reach with say 10 people on board? Might be worth a try. I would be in for 1.

It is good to see that someone took the leap for one of the chicom plasma cutters. I have been looking at them for a few years now. I think they would be great for cutting out floor pans from rusty MGs and other assorted British sports cars.

I would be interested in the longevity of the unit as the others have said. I know when I was looking for a MIG welder, I was torn between one of the HF models and some of the other name brand units. I wound up with a Lincoln Handy MIG since there was a deal at HD. I wound up getting it at lowes since they offered price matching plus 10%.

OP Please keep us up to date on how the unit performs.

I will test it on some larger plate this weekend. I also have some better pics on my phone of the unit. I will get those up too. I am having issues uploading from my phone right now.

I posted recently, I have a Cut 50 plasma cutter as well, mine is Yellow but seems the same as the original poster's. Here's the video of the first time we ever turned it on. We've gotten better with it since.

Consumables are cheap on ebay, and I bought some and I don't think there will be any shortage for the life of the product. If this thing gets me through 2 big projects I have I'll be satisifed. I paid $234 for mine and that was shipped directly from China.

Ok...just a few photos of the unit its self when I received it. The finish was quite good and everything it came with worked. The small hose wont last with the clamps. too soft. But thats easy enough to replace. The regulator works fine and is leak free.

I see at least 2 of us in so far, anyone else?

Kevin

THIS^, I'm getting ready to pull the trigger this week. Kevin, do you want to contact the seller and see if they would even go for it? Maybe then we can start a thread and get some people rounded up.

There seems to be so many versions that I'm not sure where to begin. I know there is a 40, 50 & 60 amp versions but then there are also different letters after many of them. Is there a certain combination to look for?

One thing to note. The guy I bought mine from obviously had some here in the states. It took only 4-5 working days to get mine. Some of the stuff I have ordered that is Chinese made ended up coming from china and took weeks. I am not affiliated with the person I bought mine from FYI. But if there is a group buy I would recommend asking the question of whether or not the quantity needed are currently in the US.

When I bought mine, I got it for the cheapest price on Ebay. It came from China but was in my hands a week to the day after I ordered it.

Amazon seller "kiwigo" is selling what appears to be the same one for $233 with free shipping right now.

Edit: Okay, nearly the same one, it is billed as a Cut50 and is identical as far as I can tell with the exception of an air pressure gauge on the front panel.

Another lie on back label???

Sorry to say, but they are offshore now. I bought mine because it was made in USA, then the consumables started showing offshore manufacturing, now the units themselves. I was very upset about that. I believe that miller still makes all their tools in the USA, but don't quote me. I have a cutmaster 82 and I have liked it a lot, one thing I was told when looking is buy the biggest you can afford. I am glad I did, the smaller ones would have saved me some money, but I can cut 5/8" plate at 100% duty cycle.

Is it a pilot arc unit? If so that would be a steal. They must be getting these things super cheap.

Ebay seller just responded saying that they only make $15 on these as it is and that the price could not be reduced. :(

Well, at least now we know. Thanks for taking the time!

hmm...that ***** if its true. Hardly seems worth the effort.

****, not if he sells 100 of them a month. I bet he makes $15 on a set of consumables too and probably sells 1000 of those.
