I've looked everywhere and found some good ones but most want more in shipping then what the pulley cost. :dunno: Also what is the standard step down size recommendations for meta drilling, it's going on my dp220 with aftermarket motor?

Make sure it is a machined, balanced pulley and not the cheap cast ones. What speed is your motor? What size is the motor pulley? You have to be able to calculate speed before you try to choose a speed.

Agree, a good recommendation if one is turning it high RPMs, but for slow speed metal drilling, he'll never notice the difference. (Yes, the motor pulley is always turning 1750 RPMs, but revving the spindle up several thousand RPMs will emphasize any out-of-round or out-of-balance in the drive pulley. The belt chosen is as important to smooth operation as the pulleys.) I've used the hardware store Congress cast aluminum pulleys successfully many times.

As to the "standard step down" there isn't one. It depends upon the drill diameter chosen and the metal being drilled. There are several charts available on line which give diameter and RPMs for different metals.

, it's going on my dp220
The "DP 220" is a nomenclature misnomer; actually that's the head casting number. Yes, many use it, but there are parts and info to be found by a search for Delta 14" and Rockwell 14" drill press.

I don't follow you. I have one of those charts on the wall next to my drill press. The drill speed is a function of both pulley sizes. Yes, the motor is turning at 1725 rpm but changing the size of either pulley will change drill speed. Reduce the size if the motor pulley and the drill will slow down and visa versa. The normal procedure is to compute the ratio of the two pulleys. And see how that affects drill speed. If the spindle pulley is twice the size of the motor pulley the drill will run ar half motor speed. The exact sizes is not as important as the ratio if they fit and are reasonable. For good belts many people like the link belts as they isolate motor vibration. Your experience with cheap pulleys does not reflect mine. Don't you consider 1725 rpm fast?

It's a fast speed maybe 1500 or so, I don't have a motor pulley which is why I'm asking.

And I don't have a ratio gauge like someone mentioned but if I want to turn slow is the motor pulley big and the press is small or other way around?

Most set ups look like this. Get a pulley with steps (diameters) the same size as your driven pulley. For metal drilling you need the intermediate pulley in the center so your slowest speed will appproach 200 RPM.

Speed calculation is..... motor RPM X pulley dia. = driven pulley dia. X driven pulley speed........ solve for the unknown figure, driven pulley speed in your case.

You have a ratio gauge. It is called a ruler or you can compare the circumfrence with a tape measure. If you buy pulleys, many sources will tell you the sizes of the steps. The drive pulley divided by the driven pulley times the motor speed will give you the drill bit speed. Figure out what you want and buy accordingly. Any two pulley DP I have seen has one pulley with the smallest step on top and the other one reversed. If you are looking for somebody to go shopping for you, find them at a cheap price and tell you what all your speeds will be, maybe somebody can help you.
