At work we primarily use Pelco, Amercian Dynamics, Axis, Sony, Sanyo, Arecont, Vicon, etc. but these do not normally fall into the "residential use - affordable" realm.
Supercircuits has more of the consumer level products. They have some cool kits that have the DVR for recording, cables, power supplies, cameras and mounts all bundled under a single part number. Loads of individual camera and housing options too and mostly all affordable.
Some smaller board cameras (minus housing) tip in at less than $40 and the image quality is decent.
If you don't want to be bothered with a separate DVR for recording, you can opt for IP based cameras on your home network, but the price starts to ratchet up. Cabling for those is standard Cat5, so it may help offset.

As with most things in life, price follows quality. At the site I listed you can get a 4 camera setup with a quad and monitor and cable for $239. (http://www.supercircuits.com/Video-Security-Systems/4-Camera-Systems/SY20004B) For what it is, this would likely qualify as "cheap" for anybody, but you do get what you pay for. For me, I would rather pay a bit more for a quality (longevity) improvement, even if it meant building the system in stages.
A couple answers to questions would help fine tune things:
1) What is your budget?
2) What is your scope? (what do you want the camera or cameras to do?)

I use Dlink DCS-900 internet cameras. The newer model is DCS-910, which I haven't yet tried.
The great advantage is that the camera contains a web server. With an always-on internet connection available, you can view the picture from anywhere. There is also special PC-based software available, but I have never tried it. The software has logging and motion detection (I think).
These cameras are about $80. They're technically designed for inside use. However, I have several that have been outside (under cover) on northern Vancover Island in British Columbia Canada. They work great, except that the picture is a little greenish when the temperature is below freezing.
