Cheapest way to access a GM Tech II

I need access to a GM tech II for the sister in law's car, and hopefully some one familiar with it. I have a sales man buddy at a GM dealer, but it's 70 miles away, and I'm not sure how well he is in with the techs there. So save for that possible connection, is there any cheap way to get my hands on one? Or am I SOL

That is an option I suppose. However I don't want to take the risk on some bootlegged one from online, or the risk associated with renting it out. Nor can I justify the $5400 Napa wants for one.

Why do you think you need the Tech 2 where there are aftermarket scanners that are capable of doing the job??

I need it to reprogram the BCM on a Saturn L series. But if there is an aftermarket capable of doing the job then it would work too

Saturns are very weird with their bcm's. I don't think any aftermarket would cut it. What is your location?

There are some external tools that can do similar things but usually they're limited by model (mainly the performance stuff).

I can think of situations where you'd need it (for replacement modules) in other gm cars and some of the 3rd party stuff can't do bcm "re-flashes" (as far as I know).

Because of the cost of these scanners (in the thousands)...you're pretty much s.o.l. unless you find a local mechanic with the same hardware which is not likely if a gm dealership is 70 miles away. Maybe mail away is the best option but it depends on what you're actually doing. Most of the modern gm modules are pretty good actually; they have some gremlins (bcm!) but they don't really fall apart or make a car undriveable. The worst I've seen (in my own gm circa 2005) is a wonky dashboard (no speed registered) that was fixed by replacing a couple of fuses and pulling power (reset). Just gremlins; happened once.

If it's something like that maybe just research online to see how other people (online) dealt with it. A lot of this stuff isn't tsb-ed anyway, very little chance you get it fixed off the cuff at a gm dealership. Opinion.

Or......you could save a whole lot of trouble and pay the 0.5-1.0 hr. shop time that most dealer techs would charge to re program a module. Just sayin.

Agreed, we do it several times a week for Indy shops and diyers. $59.95 at a large Ohio Chevy dealer..
