Picked this up the other day. No numbers on the top right on the back panel at all. Flat black, 40" wide, 19.75 " deep and 46" tall closed. I couldn't find a model number to save my life. Found one for something 36" wide, but no 40"s. Admittedly I'm a newb, so I might be missing it.

Yes, I own a pawn shop, and I didn't get it too cheap. Mainly because it's probably coming home w me.

Any idea on model#?

It should have an ID label on the side with model number and serial number. The only reason it wouldn't be there is because somebody scraped it off because they owe Snap-on money on it and didn't want anybody running the serial number...or it's stolen.

Being a pawnbroker, either scenario isn't very good.

It would look something like this, impossible to miss and it isn't falling off by accident.

The serial # should also be stamped inside the box if you remove bottom drawer. Could be the pic, but looks like bottom drawer is out of whack so may need to come out anyway.

Ok so you guys and gals educate me, the op bought the tool box (very nice:thumbup::thumbup:) and now he is looking for the sticker that tells the model number and other ID marks.

So what happens if the op (mtgmike) can not locate the sticker does he by law turn over the box to the police dept. as being stolen?

Do the police next track down the seller of the box and ask where he/she got it?

What recourse does the op/or other customer have if they bought the box second hand will they lose the box?

They wouldn't lose the box, at least not here in Florida as I understand it. (I'm not a lawyer lol) It would fall to who brought the box in and pawned it.

Does that mean now the op must track down the guy that sold him the box and deal with him/her now?

I always wondered when I walk into pawn shops they give the cold stare and look of death as if I am a bad guy, when all I ever do is try and buy a few tools.

If it's stolen he will. I know here in Florida a item has to be held a certain # of days before they can sell it and they have to hand over who pawned what. There's a lot of paperwork involved. Not a easy business IMO.

i cannot find a federal statute against removing serial numbers, it seems to go state by state. Here is the law for Texas, where this transaction occurred. I offer no interpretation, just a copy of the pertinent statutes.

Sec. 31.11. TAMPERING WITH IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS. (a) A person commits an offense if the person:
(1) knowingly or intentionally removes, alters, or obliterates the serial number or other permanent identification marking on tangible personal property; or
(2) possesses, sells, or offers for sale tangible personal property and:
(A) the actor knows that the serial number or other permanent identification marking has been removed, altered, or obliterated; or
(B) a reasonable person in the position of the actor would have known that the serial number or other permanent identification marking has been removed, altered, or obliterated.
(b) It is an affirmative defense to prosecution under this section that the person was:
(1) the owner or acting with the effective consent of the owner of the property involved;
(2) a peace officer acting in the actual discharge of official duties; or
(3) acting with respect to a number assigned to a vehicle by the Texas Department of Transportation or the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles, as applicable, and the person was:
(A) in the actual discharge of official duties as an employee or agent of the department; or
(B) in full compliance with the rules of the department as an applicant for an assigned number approved by the department.
(c) Property involved in a violation of this section may be treated as stolen for purposes of custody and disposition of the property.
(d) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor.
(e) In this section, "vehicle" has the meaning given by Section 541.201, Transportation Code.

If I had seen how significant that sticker is, I would have passed. Like a previous poster said, that doesn't just fall off from oil etc.

If s serial number is scratched off, or has a grind mark making it illegible on an otherwise clean tool, we pass all day. If the whole tool is beat up and the serial number is long gone, but that's reasonable for the overall condition we can go fwd, but obviously value takes a hit.

We upload pics, descriptions, info on people getting loans everyday. Hold the items 30 days. Stolen items do happen, but only when a complete ***** starts to be a thief. The easiest way to get caught is to pawn something. Nothing in the world is watched by law enforcement like pawned items. Most thieves use CL and facebook groups now.

Thanks for the tip, I'll remove the bottom drawer and investigate in the morning. This guy was a mechanic and had to shut down. Box isn't in brand new shape, so no red flags there. We'll see.

I'll post up if anything happens.

Could possibly be a sticker on these. I just looked at the KRSC46 in garage and looked w/ light and didn't see anything. Not gonna pull drawer, too much work and close to bed time lol. They may have as someone said took off sticker(s) to throw off dealer, in which case doesn't matter to OP, dealer can't come and claim it. Hopefully that's all it is and no headaches for OP. Good luck.

Wouldn't that label be there for the dealer to know all the info on the box. Wouldn't the op pull off if wished.

The original owner can pull it off, the OP can pull it off, and any other owner can pull it off, but there are many reasons why they all say do not remove.

Where did I leave that thread about being scammed...
Sheesh. This has been a rough week here at GJ. Now granted some people got three pieces of paper delivered to pass for a welder, but not everything is as crooked as it seems.

The sticker being gone wouldn't bother me all too much, unless the inside was gone also that would throw up red flags! I've debated pulling mine off my KRSC46 due to the fact whoever slapped it on did just that, slapped it on..... Wrinkles and all. Really bugs me when I see the back side of the blasted thing.

It's not illegal for you to mess with the serial number of much of your personal property.

There are exceptions: Firearms, automobiles, etc.

But a toolbox? No.

Possibly not a darn thing. Even when proven stolen, its up to the state or local law as to what happens. Here in Indiana pawned items are proven stolen regularly but the pawn shop still keeps them. The crime's restitution is on the thief as proving the crime committed is on the victim, neither are on the pawn shop nor do they have to take a loss on anything. The pawn shop is however required to take certain safeguards to aid police like holding pawned items 30(?) days before resale, taking pawner's info, basic recordkeeping of s/ns, etc, but so long as they do that they suffer no loss taking stolen items.

We hold for 30 days, and if it's proven to be stolen it's a total loss. Law enforcement picks it up, judge orders it returned. We can get a judgement against the thief but most don't bother.

Much more importantly, you want to avoid stolen items to protect your license. This business is hard and expensive to get into. You don't risk that kind of money over a thousand bucks profit. (Or a couple hundred in this case). It's chump change, relatively.

Well crud.

The bottom drawer falls off the rail. I got new rails from SO and no difference. Doesn't look like it was ever pried open??

I'd hate to attempt to shim the rail over. Anybody have experience fixing this?

I can't sell this thing to save my life. I know people are getting laid off left and right but wow!

No interest at $899 locally. I'll take it home before I sell it for less.

899 empty? Yeah the mechanics I know that are actually still working are buying full boxes for less than 4k, basically free box with purchase of tools, and the home mechanics have mostly gotten on the HF bandwagon.

Good luck.

Is it like the car dealership business? You have to have at least $75,000 in net worth to get a dealer's license in Ohio.

Did you get any further details on the serial of the box? Now I'm curious. I can see why someone might not want an eyesore on an otherwise cool looking flat black box. I can also understand someone up to shady business trying to hide the fact that they are being shady. It's a pretty nice box, you can probably do worse than bringing it home.

The second sticker was in place, serial and all. Who knows. The mechanic that sold it has pawned and redeemed many things since, so he isn't a fly by night thief type. Who knows why he took it off.

Similar. New licenses have a 150k net asset, some older ones are 25, 50k etc. but those sell for such a premium the only reason to buy them is so you can shift inventory around when opening more stores.

You aren't operating a store through the first year without access to 500k- a mill.

Finally sold the darn thing. Never again. Enjoying the business though. Most of the time when you make a mistake, you break even.
