Cool find! It's amazing what some folks throw away. When I was a kid I had a paper route in a nice suburban neighborhood, I loved trash day, I fixed up a couple dumped lawnmowers, and even a nice chainsaw (Mom wouldn't let me keep that one)!

Good luck getting the old tractor back to work.

Check for spark. Clean the carb. Check the wiring and any safety switches. Check for blown fuses. My old boss one gave me a 1975 RanchKing lawn tractor because it wouldn't start. Turned out to be a blown fuse. I still have it down at my parents' farm.

Check it for a switch under the seat that shuts the engine down if you get off with the mower deck engaged. They can fail too.

My dad used to put a drill on the engine where the pull start would go, then clean everything and have one of us hold the drill and keep the engine turning while he fiddled with things. If you have compression, clean everything, put good gas in it, change oil, it should turn over. He also used to bypass the gas tank with a small tank with fresh gas to get it running before he messed with cleaning the tank. Basically he checked compression, then spark, then cleaned the carb, put in new oil and ran the piss out of it by turning the drill till it caught. We had more small engines than space most of the time. Good luck

Yeah, some people have more money than sense! I was driving to work one winter morning about 10 yrs ago and in front of a fancy house along with their trash was a 26" Gilson two-stage snow blower ... 5 hp with electric start. I stopped and asked if it was available for me to take ... unpleasant lady finally said "OK" but told me in no uncertain terms not to bring it back when I couldn't get it to run.

Well, she was right ... it wouldn't run ... at least not until I reattached the broken wire at the deadman switch!!
