Hey all, I got referred here by a buddy about a week ago, and have hardly been able to sleep or work since... you guys really have some awesome shops and garages 
I'm mostly a novice to shops and d.i.y. - I did grow up on a farm and went thru shop class, but wish I would have paid more attention to what we were actually doing and not just following directions, and then forgetting what I'd learned. Although having a degenerative neuropathy did seem to deaden my interest in that stuff since I couldn't do half of it without help, and I didn't care enough to figure ways out to do projects myself. I got my first computer when I was about 12 and nothing else mattered after that (much to dad's disappointment)
Anyhow, fast forward a decade and a half and I am married and have a little girl and realized my naive I'll-just-buy-it-or-pay-someone-to-fix-it attitude is not working, plus my wife & kid deserve better. It also sux to have to call for help doing something as dumb as putting on a spare tire or not knowing what to do when a door in your house falls off because of a bad hinge.... it really started ******* me off and I know my wife deserved a better husband and my little girl needs a dad to fix her bike for her.
Also since I work from home as a graphics designer, I started needing more space for my office and computers, so with the help of a few buddies and my dad we built a little 12x12 office out behind the house. which did a lot to wet my appetite for doing things myself and better understanding how stuff works and where to start on a project.
So that started my quest to (re)learn how to fix or build things and figure out ways to do this sort of thing myself. this in turn is leading to an incurable addiction to tools, d.i.y. and oh yea, more tools, which means I need a shop, and then I need workbenches and then tools to make the workbenches & cabinets.... and you know how it goes...
Thankfully my landlord is also in the process of fixing up an old 12x16 building that he will let me use for a shop. Now it's up to me to plan how I am going to use it and how to arrange it an all. I'll post a thread for it once I get a few pictures.
This is a cool forum and I hope this newbie can learn a lot from some of guys with experience. thanks
