I know from experience that that method only works with empty beer cans. Full cans give you false readings.

Also, if the cans are full, V-8s and slant sixes spill too much beer. Works best on an inline 6.

It usually takes me a couple more beers to figure out whether you're on the exhaust stroke or the compression stroke. Then a couple more beers to remind me that without the head, it doesn't matter. Then a couple more beers remind me that none of it matters.

As James pointed out, this is for straight sixes only. And it really doesn't work on VWs.


Edit: Anybody remember when they used to claim that when they built Rolls Royce engines, that they could put a quarter on a piston and it would rotate, because they were so precisely balanced?

Yea, I didn't believe it then either.
