Cheesy Weed Spayers

I put a Schrader valve on my cheap sprayer. The last one lasted about 10 years.

Do you have any detail info on this "Schrader" valve??

Look for an Echo dealer. Their sprayers are excellent. Ive had Stainless Hudson and Chapin and some other ones and the Echo is the best so far.

I've been using a 3 gallon Echo one around our acreage for 7+ years and it has never let me down. Went through a few different brands before the Echo and some didn't even make it a year. The only complaint I have is the wand length as mentioned already but you can buy longer ones.

I wish they made a hand cart of some kind for the weed sprayer tanks around because at my age it's starting to ache a lot with the weight of the tank across my shoulder.

Also have a backpack sprayer that's been good so far after 3 or so years and it was from Princess Auto (HF equiv.) and am surprised it's still fine.

Hey since the sprayer experts are all here, I have need for a sprayer with really good long distance performance. I need to spray for spiders under my eaves and my house is pretty tall...

Anyone have a favorite with a good long range nozzle ?

Thanks for all the great feedback!! Looks as if there are many good (and a few not-so-good) sprayers available. After thinking about what all I want to spray and looking over the many choices, prices and features, I decided to abandon my old Roundup unit and get the Chapin 61800 4 gal. backpack sprayer:



Made in USA, reasonable quality, easier to carry that the traditional 2-gal carry-around types, and $70 at Amazon. A close second was the Sthil SG20, but it was $30 more and not USA made.

But dragging around the compressor and extension cord would not be fun.

I would like to know how this is practical? A 2 or 3 gallon sprayer needs constant pumping to keep the pressure up, esp. when the tank is nearly full to full.

Backpack sprayers are great because you can continuously spray with one hand and pump with the other without having to stop.

This year at HD I noticed Ortho has it now. For $14 you get the electric sprayer version plus an extra container of Ortho. Those hand pumps are going away in favor of these things I think. they are awesome.

Echo backpack sprayers are built fairly well for the price. Carrying around 3 gallons ina tank leaned over using one hand ***** and ruins my back for a week. The backpack sprayer solves that issue.

Besides not having a sense of humor, you can't convince me that in a 3 gallon tank that is filled to within a few of inches from the top that you can get enough air in it to keep it going until the tank is emptied. My Echo sprayer is rated to max 45 psi, so you are talking about way higher pressure than what it's rated for? What sprayer are you doing this to?

Thx for the reply, that makes real sense. Don't fill it to the fill mark... Take all day walking back and forth all over acreage to refill it to what, half way each time? No worries of rupturing a tank with toxic weed killer in it? Some people smoke for decades and never get cancer therefore it is okay. Got it. In fact, brilliant.

Go ask one of the manufacturers or OSHA and see what they have to say.

With pvc airlines? Now you're in intensive care because you didn't want to pump a few pumps.

I guess if you were an idiot and filled it to 100 psi. you might.

Your setup is ingenious, practically impossible to be further perfected... wait, maybe strapping a 12V air compressor and a truck battery to the backpack sprayer would take it to the next level

I'm ordering later today. I was just about to go to Lowes this weekend and buy a gallon of round up! w00t w00t! Now I'm set for years..hahaha

Any issues using it or anything of that nature? I don't want to kill or have brown spots on the lawn.

*EDIT: I think I was confused. I am thinking Weed Be Gone.. that's the stuff I normally use for weeds that doesn't kill grass.

The trick is to put about two gallons in it. I feel it's more about the easy pumping and not the capacity. Also the easy filling. Nothing worse than having a small sprayer suds up when you're squirting water into the little fill hole. Just the other day I was using my 1.5G sprayer for weed killer and had to keep spraying the toxic suds from the fill hole as they rose to the top...Then you have to put that pump handle in displacing more poison suds.

I have found that if you run the water into a bucket and then pour the water into the sprayer you avoid the foaming. Alternatively, Tractor Supply has product called "fast break" that prevents foaming. On sqirt in a hand sprayer and the foam is gone.

I've found a really good product for the selective targeting of broadleaf weeds in the lawn without damaging the grass is Speed-Zone from Southern States:



It's not cheap at $92/gal but it's concentrated so when diluted at 1.5 oz. Speed-Zone per gal of water it goes quite a way. Works great.

On second though, I don't remember how it was originally.

The original way is super crappy and mine is the best. It wouldn't take any more money for them to design it the right way. For $20 it's worth the little extra effort.

I purchased this sprayer yesterday. Are your clips secured to the bottom? I can't tell from your pictures. There is only a slot on the side that has the pump handle. Did you have to make a slot on the opposite side? Mine does not have any space between the bottom of the tank and the base to attach the clips, if that is how you secured yours.

Mine had/has identical factor slots on both sides, I did nothing.

Mine are secured there. It's tight but I didn't have to do much to wiggle them in there.

I picked up a solo 3gal hand sprayer from Zoro, with 20% off it was like $30 and its a super nice sprayer. Made in USA.

FYI - I always clean out my sprayer after use, a little ammonia and water,, shake it up, a bit of pressure and run the water/ammonia mixture through the wand for 30 secs.

Mine had/has identical factor slots on both sides, I did nothing.

Mine are secured there. It's tight but I didn't have to do much to wiggle them in there.

I figured out how to attach straps. But...

The thing weighs a lot. The four or five different spray head are all pretty much the same. You have to constantly pump the handle, the rubber handle slides off the metal pump handle. With it being on your back makes difficult to monitor the level of the liquid . The straps are the newer padded ones, but it still is not comfortable. It does not spray very far, maybe 5 or 6 feet. I was trying to use it to treat a pond and the mist was too fine with any of the heads.

I'll be going back to a sprayer were the tank is pressurized.
