Well, here goes...my first question on this form.

I have a super sturdy 12' work bench made out of an old bowling alley lane. The surface has been sanded down so it is bare wood now. Is there any type of clear stain/coating that can be applied that will withstand gasoline, solvent, brake cleaner, etc? I have had no luck finding anything at the ususal hardware stores. Thanks for any help!

How about epoxy? Sherwin Williams Armorseal 1000HS can be applied to wood, metal and concrete.

It's not a coating, but a covering it with stainless is also a good alternative as long as you don't work with a lot of high concentration acids.

Make that clear Epoxy. Natural wood is too beautiful to cover up!

check out this website, i found it while looking for coatings to resurface countertops, looks like they make just about any type of coating, they could probably hook you up with a clear that that will stand up to chemicals.
plexiglass is another option.
the company i bought my spray in bedliner from makes clear but it would have a rough surface, i think it saw rattler coatings or something, i can check the containers if you are interested in a rough coating.

Ever see those tables at restaurants with that clear coating on them? They usually have pictures, seashells, or something under the coating.

It is a clear polymer epoxy and is some pretty durable stuff. You can get it fairly inexpensive here... http://www.shopmaninc.com/kk121.html
