Chemical testing scrap epoxy flooring

I have several pieces of scrap Epoxy-Coat flooring that I had to scrape & peel off of my slab due to it setting to fast on a sun heated slab. I will be conducting chemical exposure experiments and posting before & after photos of each test. I want everyone to chime in on what chemicals they would like me to tryout and how long you think each exposure should be. So far on the list are the usual chemicals found in a garage, Gasoline, motor oil, brake fluid, starting fluid, WD40, beer, stomach acid, stomach acid w/beer. Lets hear it!!!:beer:

Epoxy is pretty tough stuff and is resistant to most nasties, but some will soften it over time. Try brake fluid after 4 hrs and then after 48 hrs. What about Coca Cola for short and long exposure? Try possum piss, but make sure it is male otherwise you might end up with a garage full of them.

My intent here is to test for any drastic changes to the color or wet looking finish. I'm not worried about any changes in it's ability to adhere to the concrete. I have already established that it adheres onto the slab quite well and these pieces still have some attached. As for opossum piss I'll have to wait untill this winter for that test I only catch them in the winter around here. I'm sure dog piss will be coming sooner.

salt, whatever that **** they spray on the roads in the winter(supposed to be pretty nasty stuff).....i cant think of anything else right now

How about rusty nut loosener, that stuff seems quite aggressive.

I am curious to see the results of your tests! On another note, we have heard regular old yellow mustard is rough on epoxy too!

How about fire?

Not sure if you can do that test or not, but I suspect my floor will likely see melted rubber bushings on fire, the odd rag, sparks from the MIG, whatever catches on fire during my car/bike restorations.

Maybe slag from a melted bolt?

I'd definitely like to know what road salt does to it - I'm in trouble here if it's a problem though.

I am going to revise my posting of photos to include only those tests that produce an adverse affect on the Epoxy-Coat finish. I have completed several 24hr exposure tests with no affects at all from these chemicals. Motor oils-4 & 2 cycle; engine degreaser; starting fluid; WD40; Liquid Wrench; carb & choke cleaner; brake cleaner; Corona Extra & A/B+blood (mine). Posting photos of tests without negative results would be a waste of space on the site. More tests to come in the future.

So, eitehr you cut yourself to test the floor or you have supplies of your own blood incase you need it, or youre a vampire.

I don't think your test will be correct. Due to the fact that you are starting with an improper cured sample.

The question might be. How did the sun heated slab affect the properties of the coating?

Actually I cut myself scraping up the floor so blood was the first test. That was actually over a 24 hour exposure.

You might be right Capt. Everyone should
take the tests for what they are, just a guy in his garage passing time. I am assuming you think the Epoxy might have been compromised by the quick set. If so it hasn't shown any signs of it yet.

Thanks Hobbit. How long was the brake fluid on the floor? My brother said his "special" coating (non expoxy) is supposed to be stronger/resistent to chemicals, but his flooring curled after leaving brake fluid on the floor the next day.

I didn't want to experiment on my epoxy floor. :)

Brake fluid had no adverse affect.

The brake fluid test was a 24 hr exposure. Dot-3
