I need a hoist to pick out my small 1.6L toyota engine. I looked around and mostly everyone on craigslist are selling it for $110-$120. There are a few $60-$80 but looked like it was sitting in the backyard for ages.

I check HF and they have a few still around $180 when not on sale.
I see one at Kragen this month, 2 Ton for $119 after a small rebate do you think it's a good price? That's the price of craigslist asking for theirs used one! (and I have no way to transport an assembled unit because I have no truck)

If you can get a new chinese hoist for the same price as a used chinese hoist, then by all means get the new one. A few months ago, Pep Boys was clearing out some Torin engine hoists for REAL cheap after the rebate. I think it was $69 for one with a remote pump and $59 for the regular kind.
Now, if you find a good used USA unit, then go for that. Lincoln and ExCell are two brands that used to be American.

Then again, a 1.6L toyota engine could probably be pulled out with one hand.

200 pounds? Eh, YOU go ahead and pull it out by hand, I suddenly feel a little weak.

Seriously, this is a good excuse to buy an engine hoist. I have always rented them in the past, because they take up precious space in the garage or shed and I will not leave one sitting outside under a tarp, like some of the ones you see on Craigslist.

I found out the weight after making that joke, and you thought it was light as well! My previous guess was 100 lbs.

I am just going to buy a Chinese hoist, and looks like I can sell it when done since it will still look brand new.

pick up a 2 ton hf folding one, it doesn't take up much space, and you would be surprised how much you use it for odd stuff once you have it.
