Chevrolet garage! DIY workshop build

In June I bought my first house with an attached 2-car garage. All they used it for was storage for bicycles, lawn mowers and a bunch of other stuff that will never see the inside of that garage again! haha

I'm in the process now of converting it to a good work shop, because I'm always modifying my cars. It filled up in a hurry when I moved in, but I'm working on the organizational process now. These pics are all a few weeks/months old, so I'll snap some new ones this weekend. Hopefully by then I'll have the workbench all done and the air compressor lines finished. Next on the list is ceiling insulation, fluorescent lighting and maybe drywall.

So far I've done a workbench, air compressor, welder, drywall, insulation, sink, shelving and a heater. It's coming along.

It has a long way to go, but it's getting closer. It's a 24x24. Not as big as I would have liked, but given my budget it's not too bad.

For any of the gearheads interested, the Beretta is a 91 GT car that I 3400/5spd swapped and painted with a ton of other mods I call an "SS." The Camaro is an 80 Z28 with a ~400hp 10.55:1 Vortec 355/6spd with a built everything. Still needs paint though as you can tell! haha

I did all the work in my dad's garage that we built ourselves 5-6 years ago. Here are a couple pics of his place (as I realize these are old too!) haha As you can see, these garages get used.

Quoted $3k to pave the driveway...not worth it to me.

I plan on some shelving, but nothing crazy like my old man's garage. I'd also like a sink, but I'm quickly running out of room along the back wall...and I'd rather not lose any side to side space because with two 2-doors it's tight enough as is.

Well the air lines and workbench are done, but my storage is already inadequate. haha Going to need cabinets or at least shelving, but I'll wait until the walls are done first.

Last night I did some mock up work for the fluorescents mounting a few and the receptacles in the ceiling. Just need to run the wire now, then I can drywall & insulate the ceiling and final mount the lights.

It's been raining crazy the past couple days, and all my poor cars are outside.

Sweet ride! My first car was a white Quad4/5spd 90 GTZ. Then I bought a black 95 Z26 3100/auto...which is kinda funny since I painted the new one gray with a 3400/5spd. It's kind of a combination of all the best things about my first two. Sunroof & 5spd like the 90, v6 & wheels like the 95...I could go on & on.

Congrats on the house and garage. I like the workbench design. I recognized your "SS" Beretta from Bstuff.com just as soon as I looked at the first two pics. I am a member there and Bnett also, but spend more time here. Welcome to GJ.

Small world, huh? I'm woody90gtz on the Beretta boards and woody80z28 on Camaro boards. I think I recognize Meissen from ProjectCamaro too...been a long time since I've been to that site.

Here are some more project pics. It's still a little cluttered since I'm already out of storage space, and I think I'd like to enclose the shelving under the bench for a cleaner look with less dust. I still have to run wiring for my fluorescents, but when that is done I'll be throwing some drywall & R40 on the ceiling.

But the air lines and workbench are pretty much done. I modified the regulator and the placement of the lubricator, etc so I'll have one clean dry air line on the j-hook, and one lubed line on the hose reel for my air tools. Also made a sturdy home for the vice. I painted my old old Stanley toolboxes to match my new Craftsman ones and hit the lumber with flat black and the cast iron pipe with Rustoleum Hammered gray. My graphic design background makes me a little too detail-oriented at times. haha

I stopped spending as much time on ProjectCamaro and then next thing I knew it was CamaroEvolution or something stupid like that and then got shut down. The new owner really ran it into the ground.

I guess I didn't miss that much at PC then...haha It was mainly overrun with those damn 4th-gens anyway! Although mine has some 4th-gen blood with the T56, leather interior, rear disc etc.

Here are a few progress pics. Got the receptacles wired for the fluorescents - checked them and they work good. Bought 20 sheets of drywall and enough R30 for the ceiling so we're in business. I planned to be further along by now, but I found out the hard way the garage isn't square or exactly 24 on center...

As long as everyone is tossing up pics of their Beretta's , I'll post a pic of the one we owned. This was right after I had it repainted and striped. It was an '89 GTU and probably one of the most comfortable cars I owned. It was also the only car that I could actually see real well on dark roads with. I've looked for another but they aren't around.

Nice GTU! There are still Berettas around, but it is tough to find a good one. That's why I built a rolling shell from the ground up. A guy I know put a turbo on his GTU and it's a quick car. Looks just like yours did...a good sleeper.

Yeah, the 88-91 brakes pretty much blow. My 90 GTZ couldn't stop worth a **** and my 95 Z26 was decent, so I upgraded the 91 to the 92+ bigger rotors, etc. when I built it. I have a rear disc setup to throw on too once I get a little more machining done on the backing plates at work.

I'm planning on either shelving/cabinets along the side wall eventually. Not for now though. Today's Tractor Supply flyer has another hose reel identical to mine except red for $60 I might pick up. That way my dry line & lubed line can both be on a reel.

Last night I got another row up and insulated everything to that point. Slow going being a 1-man wrecking crew, and somehow I ended up at my dad's helping him with his truck too.

Woody, nice work on the shop. I see your 80 Z has 79 vents on it. I have an 80 also, it's been gutted and fitted w/tube chassis. Long way to go. Right now it's mostly a spider condo. Keep the pix coming. Looks like drag radials on the Camaro, what's it run in the 1/4?

Yeah, the car had a 79 hood and vents when I bought it. I have the correct (better looking) 80 ones for when I finally spray it.

The drag radials have been a disappointment so far. I've had trouble hooking them with the 6spd...even with good leafs and CE Slide-A-Link traction bars. I've had lots of guys tell me they're basically for autos only, and I need wrinkle walls for a clutch car. And due to 2.0 60's my best ET yet was a 13.51, when I know it should crack 12s. Trapped 106 my first run with the 750, but broke the stock rear on the next pass & haven't had it to the track since. I'm hoping with wrinkle walls and my Moser rear it will be mid-12s. The carb tune has come a long way since my last track visit too.

You going ladder bar or 4-link with yours?

Got a lot done this weekend! Had a full day Saturday and about a half day today. It would be done already if I didnt waste so much trimming due to out-of-square construction. Had to make a duct to vent the stove fan since they just poked it in to the garage (house was there before the attached garage). Got my first row of fluorescents up. Will have another row of 4 and then two the opposite way right over the work bench (and so you will be able to see the engine bay with the hood open).

All the insulation is done now and I only have two half sheets left on the walls. Next I'll finish mudding and try to clean the place up a little! Don't know if I'll get to painting before spring, but it would be nice. I have some work to get done on the truck though before the snow flies, so it's crunch time.

Running really low on time, so I don't think it's gonna get painted before spring. Got all the spackling done though, I even got the woman to help! Cleaned it up so I can get my truck in to pull the box off & winterize it good before the snow & salt fly.
Still need to clean off the work bench!

Bought Tiffany some kitchen stuff too since she was getting jealous of the garage! Matte black faucet, black granite sink & laminate counter top. No more chrome in my house! haha

Nice job Woody! What did you put in-line between the Compressor & hose reel? I tried looking at the earlier pictures, but couldn't get any real information off the boxes?? Do uoy have any close-up pictures?
