I'm currently putting together a tool kit for my 93 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 and I'm wondering what bolt/nut sizes I might run into. Perhaps some of the guys working in GM shops could give me some direction.
Specifically:
What metric sizes?(10/11/13/15/18/? like Ford?)
SAE sizes?
How big do I need to go?

thanks

Pretty much everything, thanks to metric body fasteners and SAE drivetrain. There are a couple sizes that GM rarely uses, but only a couple. Might as well assemble a full kit.

I agree.....I have 94 1500 and just put together a whole kit with a little bit of everything. It never hurts to have to many tools with you than not enough. My kit is right behind the seat for when I need it.

Howzabout Torx?
Anything else other than, say 1/4" to 1 1/4" and 8 mm to 32mm?

I haven't run across a need for any torx bits on my truck other than for the throttle body.FWIW Lowes has got a 200 pc Kobalt set on sale right now for 99.99.Be a nice set just to throw in the for when you need it.It should cover just about anything on your truck.

I keep a Craftsman set and just got a Kobalt set today to go in my F150.

You can never have too many tools, never know what youre gonna need and when yorue gonna need it, so I like to keep whatever I can with me. Trying to build back up my mobile set though.

I used to have mostly cheap junk in my truck box, but I sold a lot of tools back earlier this year. Im in the process of rebuilding my mobile kit, and plan to pick up a bunch O' tools next time Im at the flea market!

Another thing to keep in mind is that when you use the tools it may not be your own vehicle your working on.I have helped quite a few people out that were broke down and didn't have any tools. That is another reason why I like to keep a little bit of everything in my mobile tool kit.

That looks like a pretty nice set from looking at it online, I wish lowes.com had enough sense to break the set down with a list of the socket and wrench sizes though.

Just my 2 cents but I'd check flea-bay for a used general set like the Blue Point 100 piece set # BLPGSSC100. It is only 1/4 and 3/8 drive but it is pretty well rounded, pricey, but a good truck tool set too.

I like that Kobalt set, I had a similar one for my p/u but it got lifted, so whatever you go with keep it under a lock and key.

Ahahahahaha, great minds think alike! See my earlier post:

The only thing is I was going to split up this set between my car and truck. The car is easy: old Jap stuff = 8,10,12,14,17,19mm, I was hoping the Chev would be like my experiences with Ford:13,15,18mm, thus being able to share one set with two vehicles.
I guess I'll just take the things I need for the Jap car out and keep the rest in the truck, I just was hoping not to have to haul around everything.

The thing about the 88-95 Chevy trucks is some of the bolts are sae and others are metric.Even the metric headed bolts are standard threads. That Kobalt set should serve you well.A lot of my tools are kobalt and most of them I have bought with in the past week and so far Im happy with them.I have used them quite a bit working on my vehicles.I am in the process of swapping out the old worn out V6 in my 1500 for a fresh 350.I fixing to drop the transmission in an 03 Pontiac Vibe to replace the clutch. As long as the tools I buy get the job done that's all I really care about.

Two more questions:
Does the pic on Lowes.com get bigger?(it doesn't when I click on it, but then I'm on my Special Needs computer
Am I going to run into any 12pt fasteners?(lol, I really want to prune this kit down)

Prune it

When I clicked on the pic it got slightly bigger :dunno:

Anywho, that looks like a pretty good price.

I've got an 87 K5 those late 80s/early 90s Chevys can have sizes all over the place, it makes for a fun filled day, I suggest plenty of cold brew on hand

The only 12 point fasteners are on the u joint bolts. They are 7/16 12 point.Other than that the rest are 6 point besides the torx for the throttle body and they are T20 and T25.The majority of the bolts you will work with are
SAE 1/4,5/16,3/8,7/16,1/2,9/16,5/8,3/4,15/16
METRIC 10,11,12,13,14,15.
If you have those sizes they will cover just about anything on your truck.I would also make sure to have a 15 and 17 mm flare nut wrenches for the fuel lines.Along with a few screwdrivers an adjustable wrench and a couple pair of pliers.

Make sure your metric set goes down to 7mm. GM used a lot of 7mm, especially in interiors.

You will definitely want 13-19mm. Also, the front axle shaft nut is 36mm IIRC. Don't forget allen head for the front calipers bolts.

I just finished re-assembling my 98' K1500 from the frame up and I image your '94 will be quite similar.

1 5/16 for the pitman arm nut going in the steering box shaft,18mm and 21mm used a lot too.The lug nuts are a 22mm.There are 3 extrernal torx bolts in the steering column,an E8 torx socket. An 18mm flare nut wrench is need for the power steering lines going into the steering lines.

This is great, keep 'em coming guys.
I think I need to figure out just what level of field repair I'm comfortable with before throwing in the towel for a tow truck.
